Where to Stay in London: Pick a Base for Your First Visit

Compare London’s West End, Westminster and South Bank, Paddington, King’s Cross, South Kensington and London Bridge with official hotel locations and airport-transfer guidance.

London’s size makes the hotel address part of the itinerary. A central base can make a short first visit simpler, but “central” covers very different days: Westminster landmarks, West End theatre, South Bank museums and riverside venues, South Kensington’s museums, or rail connections at Paddington and King’s Cross. Start with the area where you expect to spend the most time, then check the exact hotel pin against the attractions, show venues and airport route you have planned. Thames crossings, station exits, traffic and service changes can add time that a district label does not show.

Choose a base by the days you want

Westminster and the South Bank suit a short landmark-heavy visit. Westminster puts Parliament, Westminster Abbey and St James’s Park in one sightseeing cluster; across the river, the South Bank brings together the London Eye, Southbank Centre, SEA LIFE and riverside walks. A hotel south of the river may be close to Westminster Bridge yet still sit on a different station route from a hotel north of it. Think in clusters and check the bridge crossing and nearest station for the actual address.

Covent Garden, the Strand and Charing Cross work well for West End theatre, shopping and central sightseeing. Visit London highlights these central neighborhoods for attractions, dining and theatres. This is the strongest fit if you want to return to your hotel between daytime sightseeing and an evening show. The trade-off is a busy central environment: check the room’s position, street-facing windows and hotel arrival instructions if quiet or step-free access matters.

Paddington is practical if your plan includes Heathrow, Hyde Park or western London. Paddington Station is an important rail and Underground interchange, and the Heathrow Express runs to it; Elizabeth line and Piccadilly line services also connect Heathrow with London. A Paddington hotel can simplify that arrival, but it does not place you next to the Tower, the South Bank or East London. Compare the full route to your planned sights.

King’s Cross and St Pancras are useful for Eurostar, long-distance rail and central Underground connections. Visit the area if your schedule includes a rail arrival, the British Library, Bloomsbury or Camden. This hub makes onward travel flexible, but station proximity alone does not tell you whether your particular hotel entrance is an easy walk with cases or mobility equipment.

South Kensington is a natural base for museum-led days and Kensington Gardens. Visit London groups the V&A, Science Museum and Natural History Museum here. This can work well for families or travelers who want to return to the same museum area over multiple days; it is farther west than the Tower or many East London venues, so avoid planning several distant clusters in one tight day.

London Bridge and Tower Bridge fit visitors focused on Borough Market, the river, the City and historic riverside sights. The Hilton example below is on the south side, near London Bridge station. Compare its location with a hotel by Tower Hill or on the opposite bank: similarly named “Tower Bridge” stays can have different station approaches and airport connections.

Seven official hotel locations to compare

The examples below illustrate locations, not rankings, endorsements or personal stays. Addresses and property details were checked on current operator pages on 2026-09-26. Open the operator page and address-search map to verify the entrance, then compare the room, cancellation terms, current facilities and the station route that matters to you. No loyalty earning, redemption or status benefit is assumed.

  • Park Plaza Westminster Bridge London — South Bank / Westminster: 200 Westminster Bridge Road, Lambeth, London SE1 7UT. The operator places the hotel on the South Bank near both Westminster and Waterloo Underground stations and Waterloo National Rail. This is a useful address to compare for a river-centered or landmark-focused trip. Official location and contact · Address map search.
  • The Clermont London, Charing Cross — Strand / West End: Strand, Charing Cross, London WC2N 5HX. The hotel says it is directly next to Charing Cross Station and near Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery and the West End. This makes it a central option to compare for theatre and central sightseeing; check the exact room and station entrance for your needs. Official location and contact · Address map search.
  • The Resident Covent Garden — Covent Garden / Strand: 51 Bedford Street, London WC2R 0PZ. Its operator describes it as overlooking the Strand, within walking distance of Covent Garden and Charing Cross Underground stations and close to West End theatres and shopping. The hotel has no on-site restaurant, according to its current page; use nearby dining as part of the plan. Official hotel and location · Address map search.
  • Hilton London Paddington — Paddington: 146 Praed Street, London W2 1EE. Hilton says the hotel is linked to Paddington Station and describes Heathrow rail access and several Underground lines. Treat that as a station-convenient base, not a promise of a particular airport journey time: confirm the service and route to your terminal on your travel date. Official hotel and location · Address map search.
  • The Standard, London — King’s Cross: 10 Argyle Street, London WC1H 8EG. The operator describes it as steps from St Pancras International in King’s Cross. This is a comparison point for rail arrivals and central connections; allow time to get from the station concourse to the hotel door, especially with luggage. Official hotel and location · Address map search.
  • The Bailey’s Hotel London Kensington — South Kensington: 140 Gloucester Road, London SW7 4QH. The operator places Gloucester Road Underground station opposite the hotel and lists the V&A, Science Museum and Natural History Museum in the nearby area. The main entrance is on Courtfield Road; the operator says an accessible entrance is at the rear on Harrington Gardens. Confirm the route and room arrangements directly if you have access requirements. Official hotel and location · Address map search.
  • Hilton London Tower Bridge — London Bridge / More London: 5 More London Place, Tooley Street, London SE1 2BY. Hilton places it on the south side of the Thames, a short walk from London Bridge rail and Underground station, with Tower Bridge, Borough Market and HMS Belfast nearby. It fits a City, market or riverside plan better than a West End-first schedule. Official hotel and location · Address map search.

Plan the airport leg and last mile

First confirm which London-area airport your flight uses. Heathrow offers the Elizabeth line, Underground Piccadilly line and Heathrow Express; the Express reaches Paddington, while the other services stop at different stations. London City Airport is served by the Docklands Light Railway. Gatwick uses National Rail operators including Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink. These are not identical services or ticket products. Check the airport and rail operator’s current routes, terminal, fares, luggage arrangements and disruptions, then compare the arrival station with your hotel’s exact address. A direct train to a major station still leaves a last-mile journey.

Within London, use TfL’s Journey Planner, live status and planned-works pages for your dates instead of relying on a static map for travel time. TfL lists Oyster and contactless as ways to pay on its network, but airport rail products and coverage can differ; check the fare and payment rules for each leg before tapping in. If a show, timed entry or airport connection matters, leave slack for interchange walks, lift closures and service disruption.

For step-free travel, plan the full route from platform to hotel entrance. TfL distinguishes step-free access to the platform from step-free access onto a train, and publishes current journey/access tools and lift status. Ask the hotel about the exact entrance, lift, room and bathroom configuration; the Bailey’s, for example, lists its accessible entrance on Harrington Gardens rather than its main Courtfield Road entrance. An accessible room listing does not establish that every station, interchange, pavement or transfer is suitable for you. Confirm any assistance or vehicle requirements with the relevant provider in advance.

Choose by the first and last trip of each day, not by a hotel’s neighborhood label alone. Compare the total transfer from your airport and the time to your repeated attractions; one well-placed base can reduce extra crossings, while a single outlying event can justify staying elsewhere. Hotel facilities, access arrangements, timetables, fares and airport services can change. Links were checked 2026-09-26; reconfirm before booking and travel.
