Where to Stay in Mallorca: Choose the Right Base for Your Trip

Compare Palma, Sóller and Port de Sóller, and the northeast coast by transport, scenery and itinerary fit, with verified hotel examples and practical stay-length plans.

Mallorca is large and varied enough that the right place to sleep can shape the whole trip. Palma suits a first visit built around city sights, dining and public transport. Sóller and Port de Sóller work better for mountain scenery and a slower Tramuntana stay. The northeast coast gives a beach-led holiday and access to towns such as Artà and Capdepera, though a car or carefully planned bus connections often help. Avoid treating the island as a small day-trip radius: winding roads and seasonal services can turn an ambitious cross-island plan into a long transfer. Choose one base for a short visit, or split stays only when the second area changes the experience meaningfully.

Palma: the most flexible first-visit base

Choose central Palma if you want a walkable historic center, a substantial choice of restaurants and a straightforward arrival from the airport. The old quarter clusters around the Cathedral, Almudaina, Plaça Major and the lanes of the historic center. A central address makes early sightseeing and dinner easier, and the city gives the strongest transport connections for day trips. The trade-off is that a Palma stay feels urban: it is a city break beside the sea rather than a quiet resort holiday. A central hotel may be reached through pedestrian streets, so ask how a taxi drop-off and luggage handoff work before booking.

For a verified central example, Can Alomar is on Passeig del Born at Sant Feliu 1. Its official site describes a restored nineteenth-century palace, gives its old-town location and states that it is adults-only for guests aged 14 and over. Its rooms and rooftop terrace are presented on the operator pages. This suits adult travelers who want to stay within the city’s central shopping and dining area. Check current room facilities, access, guest policies, cancellation terms and rates directly. Can Alomar official hotel site.

Hotel Can Cirera is another old-town example, in a fifteenth-century building according to its official site. It offers a different historic-center setting for travelers who prefer a smaller property. Confirm the exact room configuration and access route, especially if stairs, mobility or bulky luggage matter. Hotel Can Cirera official site.

If evening dining and neighborhood life matter more than being beside the Cathedral, compare Santa Catalina and the western edge of the center. If beach time is the priority, Palma’s urban shoreline and the resort strip toward Playa de Palma are distinct from the old town: confirm the address, beach access and city connection rather than booking from a broad “Palma” label alone. At night, check the room’s exposure to restaurants, bars or traffic if quiet is important.

Sóller and Port de Sóller: mountains with a harbor nearby

Sóller sits inland in a mountain valley; Port de Sóller is around the bay a few kilometers away. Staying in Sóller puts you close to the central square, local shops and the historic rail station. It is a useful choice for village life, hiking plans and a quieter evening. Port de Sóller gives direct access to the waterfront, beach and promenade, with mountain views across the harbor, but the setting is more resort-like and accommodation can be spread along the curved bay. Check the exact hotel location against the walk you expect to make, particularly if your room is uphill from the waterfront.

Hotel Espléndido is on Passeig Es Través 5 in Port de Sóller. Its operator presents the hotel between sea and mountains, with rooms and dining reservations on its site. This makes it a named comparison for travelers who want to stay at the port itself. Verify the room, dining service, seasonal facilities, parking arrangements and cancellation conditions for your dates directly with the hotel. Hotel Espléndido official site.

The historic Ferrocarril de Sóller links Palma and Sóller, and a tram links Sóller with the port. These are memorable ways to travel, but they have their own published schedules, tickets and capacity; do not assume they operate as a frequent commuter service late into the evening. Check the official timetable, buy tickets through the operator, and plan a return that leaves a margin for dinner or a missed connection. TIB also publishes buses for Sóller, Deià and Valldemossa; current notices mention route and reservation changes, so consult live information before relying on a particular departure. Northeast coast: beach days and quieter towns

Base yourself around Alcúdia, Port d’Alcúdia or Port de Pollença if long beach days, north-coast scenery and nearby historic towns are central to the trip. The old town of Alcúdia and its port are different environments: the former is a walled inland town, while the port is oriented toward the bay and beach. Choose the old town for evening walks through historic streets, or the port for a beach-first routine. For a quiet retreat on the northeast coast, Canyamel and surrounding coves can suit travelers with a car and a resort-style plan, but they are less convenient for spontaneous island-wide outings.

Can Simoneta is an adults-only luxury property in Canyamel, on Mallorca’s north coast, set across restored historic buildings according to its official hotel site. The operator describes sea access by stairs and a private beach access, which are features to assess against your own mobility and expectations. This is a remote, resort-style choice; confirm current access, services, transfer options, room details and booking terms before committing. Can Simoneta official hotel site.

North-coast bases make sense when most days will be spent nearby. They are less efficient for a trip centered on Palma, the southwest and the Tramuntana in equal measure. If you will not rent a car, check the current TIB route for every planned excursion and the final return departure; direct connections are not available for every pairing, and service can vary by season and day. A hotel transfer or taxi can solve a specific gap but adds cost and should be arranged in advance where needed.

Airport arrival and moving around

Palma de Mallorca Airport has city buses and intercity Aerotib services. AENA currently lists EMT route A1 to central Palma and A2 to S’Arenal, plus Aerotib routes toward parts of the island. The airport bus stop position and operating details can change; check AENA and the transport operator shortly before travel. For intercity travel, TIB is the official place to check routes, fares, timetables and service notices. The TIB network includes buses, trains and metro, while EMT serves Palma city routes. A journey planner helps compare options, but allow time for transfers and walking from the stop to your accommodation with bags. AENA airport bus information · TIB Mallorca.

A rental car is useful for remote coves, rural fincas and several villages in one day, but parking and narrow roads are part of the decision. In Palma and Sóller, a car can become an inconvenience if the hotel has no practical parking plan. If driving, confirm parking availability, any fee, vehicle-size restrictions and the route to the hotel’s entrance. If taking public transport, use a base close to the station or a reliable bus stop and avoid lodging whose access depends on an unverified connection.

How many bases do you need?

One or two nights: Stay in Palma. You can explore the old town and waterfront, eat across several neighborhoods and use the airport bus or a taxi for arrival. A night in Sóller may make sense only if mountain scenery is the main purpose and the transfer fits your schedule. Do not split a very short trip between distant coasts.

Three or four nights: Pick a single base according to your main interest. Palma is the flexible default for first-timers without a car. Choose Port de Sóller if you are prioritizing the Tramuntana and harbor atmosphere, or the north coast if beaches dominate. With four nights, a two-base split between Palma and Sóller can work for travelers who want both city and mountain settings, but factor in check-in time, luggage transfer and rail or road schedules.

Five to seven nights: Consider two bases, such as Palma plus Port de Sóller, or Palma plus Alcúdia, to reduce long return journeys. Three bases can fit a week if each stop is at least two nights and you are comfortable repacking. Match each base to a distinct cluster: Palma and the south/west city region; Sóller and the Tramuntana; or Alcúdia and the north. Avoid one-night hops that leave more time in transit than in the place. If the itinerary includes a remote property, reserve the first-night transfer and confirm the arrival window with the hotel.

Booking details that change the experience

Compare the exact address, not only the town name. In Palma, check whether a vehicle can reach the door and where luggage should be unloaded. In Port de Sóller, find out whether the hotel is on the waterfront or above it. In Alcúdia, distinguish the old town from the port. At remote resorts, confirm the distance to shops, dining and transit, as well as whether the hotel runs seasonal services. Ask the property about quiet-room requests, air conditioning, lift access, family policies and meal arrangements when these affect your stay. Amenities and access can vary by room type or season.

Rates, availability, deposits, cancellation terms and tourist taxes depend on dates and booking conditions. Read the property’s current terms before paying, and check whether breakfast, parking or transfer is included. For summer, festivals and holiday weekends, reserve earlier; for shoulder season, verify that restaurants and facilities you care about are open. Use the operator’s current information for final decisions rather than relying on older descriptions or a general map pin.
