Where to Stay in Manuel Antonio and Quepos
Compare central Quepos, the hilly Manuel Antonio road and park-side lodging by bus access, room layout, meals and the transfer you will need after each outing.

The most important lodging choice here is not a hotel category; it is whether to sleep in Quepos town or along the hillside road toward Manuel Antonio National Park. Quepos is the transport and marina town. The park, beach corridor and many lodging properties are several kilometers farther south, on hilly terrain. A search result may call both places “Manuel Antonio,” so compare the actual property address, entrance and room route instead of booking from the name alone.
Base one: Quepos town
Quepos is the practical choice for bus travelers, marina departures, the municipal market and a more town-oriented stay. Tracopa’s official sales-point page lists its Quepos counter at the municipal market; its route finder lets you select date and destination. That does not put the park at the bus terminal: you still need a separate confirmed taxi or hotel arrangement for the park road.
Wide Mouth Frog identifies itself with Quepos/Manuel Antonio, offers a room page and booking channel, and describes its location in the town. Compare the exact room type, stairs, bathroom, occupancy and cancellation terms directly with the property. Its general lodging description cannot establish whether a particular room meets a mobility or family need. Quepos also gives a convenient base for the Marina Pez Vela district, but ask the boat operator and hotel about the exact departure and return transport.
Choose Quepos if you prefer to coordinate park transport each day in exchange for a town base; if your main goal is multiple park and beach days, compare the extra travel against a hillside property. This base is not a substitute for checking evening transportation or whether the restaurant you want is open after your return.
Base two: the Manuel Antonio hillside and park road
This corridor concentrates many hotels, restaurants and access points toward the park, but it is not a flat resort promenade. Some properties perch above the road or sit behind a steep driveway; a short distance can still involve a hill, steps, traffic or a pickup wait. Before paying, ask the hotel to identify the precise entrance and room location, the route from the public road, stairs/lift, bathroom configuration, accessible parking, and how guests reach Quepos after dinner.
Hotel Costa Verde describes its setting on a coastal rainforest cliff, between Quepos and the national-park/beach area; it lists several room categories, including family-area studios and separately labeled adults-only suites. It also lists multiple on-property restaurants and a booking path. That may suit a property-centered stay, but the hotel’s own description makes clear that its rooms are distributed across ridges and cliffs: confirm the exact room, slope and route rather than treating every category as alike. Review its direct accommodations and getting-here information, then ask about the transfer to the park entrance, beach and Quepos for your dates.
Gaia Hotel & Reserve describes a hillside property and offers a direct booking path. Its location page says the hotel can arrange a private shuttle and notes that guests arriving by domestic flight to Quepos need a taxi onward. Use those details as a starting point, then ask the property to confirm the quote, exact pickup point, room access and current service for your arrival date. Las Cascadas is another Quepos/Manuel Antonio property with an official room list and availability search. Compare its current property directions and ask about stairs, access and transport rather than inferring those details from photos or a category name.
Arrive through the gateway that fits
For international arrivals, the Costa Rica Tourism Board identifies SJO in Alajuela as the primary airport serving San José. SANSA currently advertises direct flights between San José and Quepos. The scheduled flight is only one part of the journey; compare the booking’s checked-bag rules, check-in buffer and last-mile taxi with the total road transfer. A small plane arrival at Quepos does not mean a hotel transfer is included.
For the bus, Tracopa’s date-specific route and schedule page and its terminal locations help establish which destination and station you actually need. Quepos and Manuel Antonio may appear as separate route destinations. Confirm the boarding point, ticket procedure, luggage rules and arrival stop directly with the operator. Then arrange the distinct last leg to your hotel. If your bus or flight lands after dark, ask whether the property can receive you then or arrange a vetted transfer; do not assume the steep hillside is an easy walk with bags.
Park access belongs in the lodging decision
The official Tourism Board park page says the park does not have parking and directs visitors to the SINAC reservation portal, where date-specific admission and availability are checked. Its visitor guidance says to bring identification with the reservation number. Book through the official portal, read the current terms, and coordinate the entry time with the hotel’s actual departure plan. Staying near the park road does not grant admission, guarantee entry, or create a parking place.
Ask whether a property’s shuttle is included, runs only at certain times, requires booking, or reaches the actual entrance you need. Confirm return arrangements too. If you have mobility needs or are traveling with a stroller, ask about the entire chain from room to car or road to park entrance, not just whether the hotel uses the word “accessible.” The same check applies to dining: verify whether the restaurant is open to non-guests and whether the room rate includes meals.
Compare three kinds of stay
Town hotel: useful if the bus terminal, groceries and marina are priorities. Wide Mouth Frog gives one operator example to compare directly; check the actual room and any transfer to the park.
Cliffside hotel: useful if you want lodging, meals and a forest/coast setting in the same area. Costa Verde lists many room types, restaurants and a hillside position. Confirm which room suits your group and how you will reach town.
Reserve-style property: a more private/hillside orientation can suit guests who prefer arranged transport. Gaia publishes its location and shuttle arrangement; confirm the exact service and cost with the property. Las Cascadas offers another official room comparison. These are examples, not rankings or statements about current room availability.
How many nights for one, two or three days?
One full day: Two nights usually gives you the arrival evening, one full park or coast day and a departure day. With only one night, don’t count both travel margins as sightseeing. Choose a Quepos base if you are arriving by bus or planning a marina trip; choose the hillside only after you have confirmed the last-leg transfer.
Two full days: Three nights gives an arrival night before Day 1, sleeps after Day 1 and Day 2, then departure on Day 3. One day can be the park; the second can be a boat outing or a slower town/coast day. Two nights usually provide only one complete intervening day. One hotel is simpler than moving from Quepos to the hillside mid-trip.
Three full days: Four nights normally yields an arrival evening, three full days and departure Day 4. You can schedule a park day, a boat day if the operator confirms conditions, and one flexible day. If a flight or bus consumes a full day, add a night instead of compressing the program. A fifth night can make sense for a longer multi-town Central Pacific itinerary, but a three-day Manuel Antonio stay does not require a second base by default.
Booking checks that resolve the real tradeoffs
Compare total trip friction, not a hotel’s marketing label: airport or bus station, final transfer, road position, slope, parking, meal options, room layout, check-in timing and return trip after dinner. Use the operator’s booking pages for dates and room inventory and contact the property for details that vary by room. If a specific service is essential—crib, elevator, step-free shower, kitchen, air conditioning, shuttle or dietary meal—get that specific detail in writing before paying.
For park tickets, use SINAC, not a hotel’s generic “park access” package unless it clearly states the ticket and date-specific terms. The Tourism Board says tickets are handled through SINAC and that there is no parking at the park. Ask how the property transfer works without assuming the hotel controls park entry. Keep your identity document and ticket instructions available as directed by the official booking page.
For a broader arrival and activity sequence, use the Manuel Antonio first-visit guide. If meals shape your choice between town and hillside, read the food companion before selecting a nonrefundable base.
