Where to Stay in Marrakech: Medina, Guéliz or Hivernage
Compare a medina riad with Guéliz and Hivernage hotels, plan the airport or station last mile, and match your base to one, two or three sightseeing days.

Choose the side of town that matches your days
Marrakech’s main lodging decision is whether you want to sleep inside the medina, near the station in Guéliz, or in the larger-hotel district of Hivernage. These are distinct bases, not three names for one walkable center. The medina brings souks and historic sites close but adds a last-mile problem: a car may stop at a gate, leaving you to walk through lanes with bags. Guéliz has broader streets and the train-station area, which can simplify rail arrivals and departures. Hivernage has larger hotel options around Avenue Mohammed VI and the convention-center area, but most medina sightseeing still needs a planned walk or ride.
Start with your actual list of timed visits. If most days are in the medina, prioritize the gate and route from the accommodation over a map’s straight-line distance. If your trip includes the Majorelle Garden, Yves Saint Laurent Museum, station or modern-city restaurants, Guéliz can reduce repeated backtracking. If you value a full-service hotel and will use taxis or transfers, compare Hivernage. A single hotel is often simpler for a short stay because moving luggage across town costs time.
Medina: atmosphere with a real luggage plan
A riad inside the old city can put you close to the souks and monuments, but its address alone may not tell a driver where to stop. Before booking, ask which gate is nearest, where a car can reach, how far the final walk is, and whether staff can meet you or help with bags. Ask about stairs, lifts and the route to the room rather than assuming every traditional building has the same layout. Check the route in daylight if you can; lanes can be confusing after dark and a map pin may not reveal the final turns.
Example: Riad Hamid Hotel & Spa. Its official site places the property at 07 Biss, Derb Ahmer, Laksour, in the medina and lists its own booking and contact channels. The operator also offers an airport transfer with an escort to the riad. Contact it before arrival to confirm the meeting point, where the vehicle can stop, what the escort covers and how luggage is handled. This is a concrete medina-base example, not a promise that every vehicle can reach the door.
Example: Riad Livia. The property’s official contact page gives Derb El Arsa 36 in the medina and explains its transfer and taxi approach using Place Sidi Ayoub and Bab Ghmat. This illustrates why it is worth requesting the property’s own last-mile instructions before arriving. Check the operator’s current age policy, exact room arrangements, stairs and booking conditions directly; suitability depends on the travelers and dates.

Guéliz: station access and a modern-city base
Guéliz is the modern district around broad avenues, cafés, shops, cultural venues and the railway-station corridor. The official tourism guide identifies the bus and train stations, Majorelle Garden and Yves Saint Laurent Museum among its attractions. It can be a practical base if your itinerary mixes museum visits, rail travel and the medina, or if you prefer streets where a vehicle can approach the hotel more easily. That convenience does not mean every hotel is step-free or that the medina is a short walk; check the exact route and transport for the places you will visit.
Example: Fashion Hotel Gueliz. Its official site lists 45 Avenue Hassan II, beside the railway station, and describes the medina as a separate trip from the property. Review its direct booking and contact pages for the room you need and ask about entrance steps, lifts, family occupancy and late check-in. It is an example for travelers prioritizing the station/Guéliz side, not a recommendation based on personal stay.
Hivernage: larger hotels and planned transfers
Hivernage is often associated with larger hotels, restaurants and nightlife along the modern-city side south of Guéliz. It may suit a traveler who wants on-site services or has a conference, event or evening plans nearby. For a medina-focused visit, budget time and transport to cross between the hotel and old city, especially if your accommodation is not near a route you can comfortably walk. Verify return arrangements for late evenings rather than assuming that nearby attractions or a taxi rank translate into a door-to-door journey.
Example: Mövenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi Marrakech. Accor’s official location page lists the property on Avenue Mohammed VI in Hivernage and gives its address and contact details. It identifies the airport and medina as separate destinations and says hotel-arranged private transfers can be requested. Compare its live booking terms and contact the property about your exact room, children, access, luggage and transfer arrangements. Distances stated by a hotel are orientation only; traffic, route and the exact entrance affect travel time.
Arriving from the airport or train station
Marrakech Menara Airport is close to town, but your arrival plan depends on the base. The official airport operator ONDA lists a taxi station at the airport esplanade and a bus shuttle between the city and airport. Check current operations and where the service stops before choosing it. A taxi or hotel transfer can still end at the edge of medina lanes rather than at your riad door. Before you fly, ask the lodging for the gate name, a recognizable meeting point, a local phone number and whether someone will walk you to the property.
If you arrive by train, use ONCF’s official journey and ticket information, then plan the final trip from Marrakech station to the actual accommodation. Guéliz properties near the station may reduce that last leg; a medina riad requires a transfer or taxi plus potentially a walk. If you have bulky luggage, arrive late, or are traveling with children, consider the convenience of arranging the property’s transfer in advance and confirm the pickup details with the property itself.
Within Marrakech, the ALSA City Tour is a sightseeing bus with published routes, not ordinary point-to-point city transit. Use it only when its stops and operating pattern fit your plans. For other journeys, check current public transport details with the local operator or ask your hotel for the practical route; if using a taxi, confirm the destination and fare arrangements before departure. Do not build a tight timed ticket around an assumed drive time.
One, two or three sightseeing days
One day: Choose the neighborhood that contains the main reason for the stop. For a medina day and one night, a riad can put you near the old-city walk, but arrange the gate and luggage transfer before arrival. For a station connection or a day focused on Guéliz, choose a base around the station side and make one planned trip to the medina. If your flight arrives and departs the same day, spend the time near the airport or one reachable district rather than attempting a rushed cross-city itinerary.
Two days: A medina base works well for one day of souks and historic sites followed by a second day that adds a garden, museum or Guéliz. A Guéliz base can reverse the emphasis: explore the modern district and garden first, then set aside a full day for the medina. Hivernage suits a stay where the hotel or an event is part of the plan; map both day routes from its actual entrance. In all cases, confirm the last return journey before scheduling dinner or a timed ticket.
Three sightseeing days: Keep one hotel and assign two days to separate medina clusters, then use the third for Guéliz, the garden-and-museum area or a planned excursion. Three sightseeing days may fit a two-night stay only if you arrive early on day one and depart late on day three; otherwise add the travel nights needed to preserve three full days. A day trip outside Marrakech is a separate travel day, not an extra medina day. Write down arrival and departure times before comparing nightly rates or moving hotels.
Access, family needs and booking details
Contact a property directly about its entrance, number of stairs, room floor, lift, bathroom layout, baggage storage and whether a car can stop nearby. Traditional medina buildings can have stairs and narrow approaches, while larger hotels can also have a walk from a drop-off to reception or a room. Do not treat a district label, nearby transit stop or hotel marketing term as proof of step-free access. Ask for the exact room and route that would be booked.
For families, check occupancy rules, bed configuration, cot availability if needed, and whether the accommodation can meet you at the gate. A quiet-looking map pin does not guarantee a calm room, and broad claims about safety or noise are not a substitute for asking the property about the exact room and dates. If a late arrival or early flight matters, confirm reception hours and transfer arrangements directly.
Compare the total stay rather than a headline room rate: taxes, breakfast, cancellation terms, airport transfer, daily rides and the time needed to reach the places you plan to visit. Points can be useful, but check the program’s exact dates and room type before transferring them. Do not assume that award availability, late checkout, breakfast or an upgrade will apply until the booking terms confirm it.
