Medjugorje Pilgrimage Guide

Plan a prayerful visit to Medjugorje with current parish worship guidance, practical Bosnia and Herzegovina arrival choices, thoughtful lodging and flexible one-, two- and three-day plans.

Travel guide

The twin towers and pale facade of St James Church in Medjugorje

Medjugorje (Međugorje) is a town and Catholic parish in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Herzegovina region. Since 1981 it has been associated with reports of Marian apparitions. Visitors come for prayer, Mass, reconciliation, reflection, pilgrimage and to learn about the story and its place in Catholic life. Plan around the parish’s current worship program and approach the hills as demanding outdoor paths, not as attractions with guaranteed access.

What the Church has and has not determined

The Holy See’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith published its 2024 note, The Queen of Peace, and said that the conditions were present to proceed with a Nihil Obstat. The DDF note said the Bishop of Mostar-Duvno would issue the corresponding decree. The bishop issued that decree on 19 September 2024, in agreement with the Holy See, as Vatican News reported and the diocesan decree records. The note says this permits the faithful to adhere prudently to the spiritual proposal and authorizes public acts of devotion. It explicitly does not declare the alleged supernatural events authentic or the phenomenon supernatural, and Catholics are not obliged to believe in them. It asks that pilgrims come to encounter Mary and Christ through prayer, Scripture, Eucharist and adoration rather than seeking meetings with alleged visionaries. Keep that distinction in view whether you are devout, curious or critical of the claims.

The main parish gathering place is the Parish Church of St James the Greater Apostle. It is a parish church, not a basilica. The parish identifies the church, Apparition Hill (Podbrdo) and Cross Mountain (Križevac) as principal prayer places. The outdoor altar and its surrounding prayer area host larger gatherings; the Adoration Chapel provides a quieter setting for personal prayer when open. Do not assume every room or route is available at every hour. Follow current notices and local staff instructions.

Make worship the anchor

Start with the parish’s prayer program throughout the year. It publishes seasonal evening schedules and recurring prayer gatherings, including Rosary, Mass, adoration, Friday veneration of the Cross and prayer on the hills. The times change by season and may change for particular days. Recheck the page shortly before departure and after arrival, then consult official parish news for feasts, retreats and special events. A regular program is not a guarantee that every service will happen unchanged on your date.

For a Catholic Mass search beyond the parish calendar, go to the MassTimes.org homepage and search the exact name “Parish Church of St James the Greater Apostle, Medjugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina.” Confirm any result with the parish: language, time and location can vary. Mass is distinct from confession, adoration, Rosary and tours. The parish’s instructions for pilgrims and organizers ask group leaders to announce their arrival and coordinate liturgical needs with the Information Office. They state that Mass is celebrated in the parish church; Mass in the Adoration Chapel and Hall of John Paul II is possible only with prior permission and agreement coordinated with the Information Office and the sisters in the sacristy. The guidelines prohibit Mass in guesthouses, private homes, on hills and in other community or chapel venues within the parish territory; Mass in communities is limited to those approved by the Apostolic Visitor. Do not plan an informal outdoor service or invite an unapproved leader to direct prayer.

Arrive early enough to enter quietly, silence devices and avoid blocking doorways. The parish asks visitors not to photograph during Mass or Eucharistic adoration. Dress respectfully and leave room for local worshippers and groups praying in other languages. If you need confession in a particular language, ask the parish office or check current arrangements instead of assuming a priest will be available at a convenient time. Feasts and summer gatherings can change how the precinct works, so keep the schedule loose and follow staff direction.

Know the hill routes

Apparition Hill rises above Bijakovići and is reached by a steep, rocky path. Parish material describes prayer stations and a statue at the upper prayer place, with a route descending toward the Blue Cross. Cross Mountain is a separate, higher hill marked by a large concrete cross and stations of the Way of the Cross. These are devotional routes on uneven natural ground, not paved promenades. Loose stones, direct sun, heat, rain and darkness can make footing difficult. Wear secure shoes, carry water, allow rests and do not climb if weather, health, balance or footwear makes it unwise. Do not assume there is an accessible alternative to the full route, lighting, shade, toilets, rescue service or an open path. Ask the parish on the day, heed any closure and turn back if conditions change.

Prayer close to the church is meaningful for visitors who do not climb. The parish precinct, outdoor prayer areas and statue of the Risen Christ offer places for reflection, subject to current parish arrangements. Joining a prayer at a hill is not a test of devotion. Group leaders should confirm visits and any liturgical needs with the Information Office; do not lead organized prayer in parish sacred areas without the required permission.

Getting to Medjugorje

Medjugorje is in Bosnia and Herzegovina, not Croatia. Visitors often compare flights via Sarajevo or Mostar with gateways such as Dubrovnik or Split in Croatia. A Croatian airport followed by a road transfer involves an international land border. Route, documents and entry eligibility depend on nationality and current rules. Check the Bosnia and Herzegovina Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa regime page by nationality; it is in Croatian and may need translation, so contact your nearest BiH diplomatic mission if you need help confirming your case. For Croatia, use the Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs visa requirements overview. Requirements depend on each traveller’s nationality and travel document, including any transit country; a visa for Croatia/Schengen and permission to enter Bosnia and Herzegovina are separate questions. A short flight connection does not remove border formalities.

Mostar Airport’s passenger transport page describes a Mostar Bus shuttle between the terminal and Mostar city when served flights arrive. That service takes you to Mostar, not directly to Medjugorje. Check the live airport flight and transport information, then confirm onward travel with the operator or your lodging. Mostar Bus publishes a Medjugorje route notice and a timetable directory; schedules are operational details, so check the day and time you need. If the connection does not fit, ask your hotel about a prearranged transfer and confirm pickup point, cost, luggage and cancellation terms directly.

Sarajevo may be the better gateway if its flights or onward plans work for you, but it is farther from Medjugorje by road. Compare the whole journey: airport-to-city, intercity bus or road transfer, and expected arrival time. Use Sarajevo Airport’s official passenger information and the bus operator’s current timetable. A private transfer can reduce changes; book directly with a named provider or property and get written confirmation. Do not assume a third-party booking page has arranged a transfer with your airline or the parish.

If driving from Croatia, consult the Croatian Automobile Club’s road and border notices and the Bosnia and Herzegovina Border Police updates near departure. Conditions vary by crossing and roadworks; HAK says waiting-time notices change frequently. Keep travel documents ready, confirm your rental contract permits cross-border travel, and check insurance in both countries. Use official guidance for your own passport and any transit country rather than relying on an old visa-free list. Leave a generous buffer before a flight or scheduled service.

Choose a base and eat locally

A central village base makes it easier to walk to the parish church, but “near” does not mean step-free, quiet or convenient for everyone. Compare guesthouses and hotels by exact address and the route you would actually walk. Around major feasts and international events, book early with clear cancellation terms. Confirm stairs or lift, meal service, payment method, check-in time and mobility details directly with the property.

Two official property sites give useful starting points. Hotel Leone lists its central address and says it is about 150 metres from St James Church. Hotel Herceg describes its location as central and about 600 metres from the church; its site presents accommodation choices and an in-house restaurant. These are examples, not endorsements or promises of availability. Ask each hotel about your specific mobility needs and the walking route, especially if a companion has difficulty with uneven ground.

For a meal on site, Hotel Herceg’s official page identifies its restaurant and describes Mediterranean cuisine with local specialties. Confirm the menu, ingredients, hours and suitability for dietary needs directly with the property. For another meal, check a current local listing or ask your host which independent venues are open instead of relying on undated recommendations. If your group fasts or has dietary needs, tell the venue ahead and carry a simple snack for a delayed transfer or long service.

Treat the village as a small walkable base rather than a city with frequent transit. Agree meeting points with companions, save your lodging address offline and ask before photographing people or entering a private gathering. Shops selling devotional objects and local produce serve residents as well as visitors; do not interrupt prayer to browse or take photographs. Protect quiet around the church and hills and leave room to rest between worship and walking.

A flexible one-day orientation

For one day, settle in and check the live parish program. Begin at St James Church and its prayer precinct, making space for personal prayer before choosing a service. If you are Catholic, select Mass or another liturgy from the current calendar and confirm language and location. Take a meal break, then consider Apparition Hill only if weather, daylight, footing and your health make the climb sensible. A shorter visit to the lower prayer area is an alternative. Return with margin for the evening program; do not book a tight onward transfer immediately after worship.

A reflective two-day visit

Use day one to orient at the church and attend a service, keeping the rest of the day light after travel. On day two choose one hill instead of trying to “complete” both. Apparition Hill is closely associated with the reported events; Cross Mountain invites reflection on Christ’s Passion through its stations. The parish’s weekly prayer times can help you decide, while current weather and your group’s capacity should settle the choice. Return for food, conversation or quiet time, and leave a generous margin around the evening program. This rhythm gives the parish and outdoor prayer room to breathe without turning the pilgrimage into a checklist.

A measured three-day stay

Spend day one settling, seeing the parish precinct and joining a current worship service. Give day two to one hill or unhurried prayer close to the church. On day three revisit a place that mattered, attend another part of the parish program if the calendar supports it, or consider a relaxed half-day in Mostar only if transport is confirmed and the excursion fits your purpose. Do not attempt both hills on one day to fill a schedule, and do not assume every visitor can climb either route. A longer stay can mean more silence and rest, not a denser plan.

Before departure, check your operator and border notices again, reconfirm transfer pickup and keep time for unexpected delays. For many pilgrims, Medjugorje’s central purpose is prayer. Careful preparation, respect for the parish community and honest expectations about the Church’s discernment help protect that purpose.
