Where to Stay in Munich: Altstadt, Hauptbahnhof, Schwabing or Lehel?

Choose a Munich base around your first-visit plans, compare six hotels using official location details, and plan the airport S-Bahn connection with current service information.

Travel guide

Pedestrian street with pale Munich facades and bicycles

For a first visit, Munich’s Altstadt (Old Town) is the simplest base for walking among Marienplatz, the Frauenkirche, Viktualienmarkt and the Residenz. The main-station district is practical for rail arrivals and airport S-Bahn connections; Schwabing and Maxvorstadt put cafés, museums and the English Garden closer, while Lehel is a quieter-feeling residential edge east of the center. These are tradeoffs in location, not guarantees about noise or atmosphere at any particular address. Compare the exact hotel location with your plans, late-night return route and luggage needs.

Choose your Munich base

  • Altstadt and the Marienplatz area: Best for a very short first visit focused on the Old Town’s central sights, shopping streets and historic venues. The official city guide describes many major attractions as close enough to explore on foot. This convenience comes with visitor activity and busy streets; ask about the room’s orientation and current noise conditions if quiet matters. A central Old Town address does not automatically make airport arrival door-to-door: check the walk from the closest S-Bahn or U-Bahn stop and the hotel’s access instructions.
  • Hauptbahnhof and Ludwigsvorstadt: Consider this for an early train, a rail-heavy itinerary, or a stay where direct access to the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and long-distance trains is useful. The station quarter is mixed and busy, with hotels, shops and varied food options; streets differ block by block. The S1 and S8 both connect the airport and Hauptbahnhof, but service work can change stops or require replacement buses. For a one-night stop, this base can reduce transfer friction; for a relaxed Old Town-focused trip, compare the extra walk or ride against staying closer to Marienplatz.
  • Schwabing and Maxvorstadt: A good fit if museums, universities, cafés, the English Garden and a neighborhood evening matter as much as the historic core. Maxvorstadt includes the Kunstareal museum district; Schwabing is associated with cafés, cultural history and the garden’s northern reach. These areas stretch north of the Old Town, so look up the transit stop closest to the specific hotel and account for returning at night. “Schwabing” is sometimes used loosely for nearby Maxvorstadt, so trust the address and map over the label.
  • Lehel: A useful middle ground east of the Old Town, near the Isar and within reach of the center, with U-Bahn service in the area. It can suit travelers who want central access without staying directly on the busiest visitor streets. Confirm the actual route from the station and the hotel, especially with luggage or mobility needs; a neighborhood-level description does not guarantee a step-free approach.
  • Haidhausen and Ostbahnhof: Consider the east side for restaurants, local streets and a convenient rail connection at Ostbahnhof. It works well when your itinerary includes the east side, trade-fair connections or onward rail travel. For a short first visit centered on the Old Town, count the ride or walk each way before choosing a hotel there.
  • Westend and Theresienwiese: This area can suit Oktoberfest visitors, event travelers and guests who want to stay near the fairground or a specific venue. Event dates affect availability and the feel of nearby streets; check the official festival calendar and hotel terms early. It is south-west of the Old Town, so compare your daily transit and evening return routes.

Six hotels to compare by location

These examples illustrate different bases and are not rankings or endorsements. The linked operator pages confirm the named property and address or location. Check that the hotel is operating for your dates, and confirm room terms, entrance, lift, accessibility, luggage arrangements and airport directions with the property. Address-search maps are for orientation only; they do not verify an entrance, route, travel time or step-free access.

  • Hotel Torbräu — Old Town / Isartor: Tal 41, 80331 Munich. Its official site identifies the hotel as being in the city center. Compare it for an Old Town base near the eastern side of the historic core; check the precise route to the nearest transit stop and ask about the room’s street exposure. Official hotel site and address · Address-search map.
  • Hotel Bayerischer Hof — Altstadt / Promenadeplatz: Promenadeplatz 2–6, 80333 Munich. The hotel’s official site confirms its address in the Old Town. Consider it as a reference point for central sights, cultural venues and shopping; compare room terms and the precise walk to the S-Bahn/U-Bahn for your own trip. Official hotel site and address · Address-search map.
  • Ruby Rosi Hotel & Bar — Hauptbahnhof: Bayerstraße 21, 80335 Munich. Ruby gives this address and describes the property as beside the central station; its directions page provides its own airport and station guidance. Compare it for a short visit when main-station access matters. Recheck the airport advice against live S-Bahn information, particularly during works. Official hotel location · Ruby’s directions · Address-search map.
  • 25hours Hotel The Royal Bavarian — Hauptbahnhof: Bahnhofplatz 1, 80335 Munich. The operator says it is opposite Munich Central Station and describes the area as Ludwigsvorstadt, within walking distance of the Old Town. Compare it for rail and transit connections with the station district immediately at the door. Official location, address and public transport details · Address-search map.
  • Hotel ADRIA München — Lehel: Liebigstraße 8a, 80538 Munich. Its official information page places it in Lehel and says the Lehel U-Bahn station is a two-minute walk away. Compare it for an east-central base near the Old Town and Isar; confirm current station service and the route that suits your needs. Official address and arrival information · Address-search map.
  • Ruby Lilly Hotel & Bar — Maxvorstadt / north of the station: Dachauer Straße 37, 80335 Munich. Ruby describes it as a short walk from the center and gives directions citing nearby Königsplatz U-Bahn and Stiglmaierplatz U-Bahn/tram stops. Consider it for museum and northern-center plans or a neighborhood stay; compare its walk and transit connections with a hotel beside Hauptbahnhof if airport access is the priority. One, two or three days: keep one base

  • One day: Choose Altstadt if your priority is the compact first-visit circuit around Marienplatz, the Frauenkirche, Residenz and Viktualienmarkt. Choose Hauptbahnhof if you are arriving by train, leaving early, or want to simplify a short airport transfer. Schwabing/Maxvorstadt makes more sense when the museum quarter or English Garden is your main anchor. For a one-night stay, include your arrival and departure transfers before choosing for atmosphere.
  • Two days: Keep one hotel and divide the trip by area: spend one day on the Old Town and central sights, then use the second for the Kunstareal and Schwabing or a different district that fits your interests. A central base leaves more options for weather and energy changes; a Schwabing or Lehel base trades some Old Town proximity for its local setting. Use MVV’s journey planner to compare actual trips from the property.
  • Three days: A central base remains practical. Group Old Town sights on one day, museums and Schwabing/English Garden on another, then leave a third for a chosen neighborhood, palace, event or day trip. If Oktoberfest or a major event is central to your trip, staying closer to that venue can outweigh a central sightseeing location. Moving hotels within Munich usually adds packing and check-in without removing transit from the itinerary.

Munich Airport and city transport

Munich Airport is connected to the city by S-Bahn lines S1 and S8, which serve the airport terminal station and continue through the central network. Munich Airport currently describes the trip to Hauptbahnhof as about 40 minutes and the combined departures as a 10-minute interval; the S1 and S8 each run less often individually. The Munich S-Bahn operator confirms both lines connect to Hauptbahnhof. These are planning references, not a guarantee for a particular departure: works and disruptions can alter routes, times and stopping patterns. Check the airport or S-Bahn operator’s live information and the MVV journey planner on your travel date, especially for late-night arrivals.

The airport also lists bus services, including the Lufthansa Express Bus to Nordfriedhof and Hauptbahnhof. Compare its current stop and operating hours with your hotel location and arrival time. A taxi or pre-booked car can reduce transfers, but road time varies and the final drop-off may be away from a pedestrian street or hotel entrance. Ask the property for the exact arrival point and luggage route.

Within Munich, the MVV network includes S-Bahn, U-Bahn, bus, tram and regional rail. Use the MVV journey planner for address-to-address directions, departures and service notices; it can show walking links and accessible-route options. A hotel near one line is not necessarily convenient for every day’s plan, so check the return journey after evening activities as well as the outbound connection. Ticket zones and products depend on the route and current rules; use the operator’s current ticket information rather than an old hotel page or printed timetable.

Before you book

Compare the same dates and room type, including taxes, breakfast, cancellation terms and any additional charges. Confirm check-in, bed setup, room size, air conditioning or ventilation, luggage storage, lift service, accessible room features and bathroom configuration directly with the hotel. If street noise matters, ask about the specific room and expected conditions for your dates. For step-free travel, confirm the complete route with both the hotel and transport operator; a station or hotel location alone does not establish an accessible door-to-door journey. Recheck hotel operations, event dates, airport service, construction notices and attraction opening or booking requirements close to travel. Research checked on 2026-09-27.
