Nice is the best food base for a first stay on this stretch of the French Riviera: its old town concentrates Niçoise cooking, markets and casual snacks. Cannes, Antibes and Menton each make a rewarding day trip, but they bring different ingredients and meal styles. Plan around the regional TER train along the coast, and keep dinner close to your base when you do not want to watch the clock for the last train.
Start with the dishes of Nice
Socca is a thin, hot pancake made from chickpea flour and olive oil, baked until its edges brown. It is naturally made without wheat in the traditional recipe, but ask about shared ovens, utensils and cross-contact if gluten is a medical concern. Eat it right away while it is warm. Pissaladière is an onion tart on bread dough, usually topped with anchovy and small black olives. Pan bagnat is a round sandwich filled with the ingredients of a Niçoise salad; a traditional one includes tuna or anchovy, egg, vegetables and olive oil, so it is a substantial snack and not a vegetarian default.
Other Niçoise specialties include petits farcis, vegetables stuffed with a savory filling; tourte de blettes, Swiss chard pie with savory and sometimes sweet versions; zucchini-flower fritters; ravioli; and daube niçoise, a slow-cooked beef stew. A salade niçoise is a composed salad whose accepted ingredients are a matter of local tradition; check the restaurant’s version rather than assuming it contains a particular ingredient. Nice’s Cuisine Nissarde label recognizes food businesses committed to regional recipes and ingredients, and is a useful way to find traditional cooking. Nice: casual socca and a sit-down Niçoise meal
The Old Town and port are ideal for a snack crawl: share socca or pissaladière, then leave room for dinner. For a full meal, choose a restaurant that clearly identifies Niçoise dishes and check its service days; small kitchens may close between lunch and dinner or for a weekly rest day.
Chez Pipo — Nice port, 13 rue Bavastro. Its operator centers the menu on socca and describes the chickpea pancake’s crisp and tender texture. It also lists pissaladière and other local bites. The restaurant says it takes no reservations and posts lunch and evening service windows; check its site on the day in case of changes. Operator menu, address and hours.
Chez Davia — Nice, 11 bis rue Grimaldi. This family restaurant says its cooking follows Niçoise traditions and highlights daube niçoise, barbajuans and lemon tart, with seasonal suggestions. It is included in the 2025/26 Cuisine Nissarde list. Reserve for a proper sit-down dinner and confirm which dishes are available; the published service schedule differs by weekday. Cannes: Forville market and the catch of the day
Cannes’ identity is tied to fishing, market produce and Provençal cooking. Make the covered Marché Forville your morning anchor: the tourist office describes local fish, seasonal vegetables, fruit and herbs, with the market open Tuesday through Sunday. On a market day, build lunch around the day’s catch or produce instead of expecting a fixed specialty everywhere. Cannes Tourism: local food and fishing · Cannes markets and days.
Le Caveau 30 — 45 rue Félix Faure, between Forville and the waterfront. The operator describes a brasserie menu centered on seafood platters, fish, grilled dishes and the day’s catch, close to the old port and market. Book ahead if you have a set lunch or dinner time, and ask about the day’s fish and market availability. Operator specialties, menu and reservations.
Antibes: Provençal fish and a market-side lunch
Antibes has its own old-town market and harbor rhythm. Walk the market and ramparts, then choose a seafood lunch in town rather than trying to add Cannes and Antibes to one meal plan. Bouillabaisse is a longer, often preordered meal: ask about the recipe, number of diners, price and notice required when reserving.
L’Odyssée chez Mô — Antibes. The operator describes market-led Mediterranean cooking, with whole fish, pasta, risotto and vegetarian dishes. Bouillabaisse is served in two courses and requires booking 48 hours ahead according to its site; confirm the current menu and order policy. Operator menu and bouillabaisse booking details.
Another option is La Gravette, listed by the Antibes Juan-les-Pins Tourist Office opposite the port. Its listing says the restaurant buys fish from local fishermen and names bouillabaisse, mixed fish and palamite among its dishes. Opening times are not guaranteed by the listing, so contact the venue before making a special trip. Official Antibes tourism listing for La Gravette.
Menton: lemon, olive oil and the borderland table
Menton sits near the Italian border, and its food reflects coastal produce and neighboring Ligurian influences. The local specialty is the Citron de Menton IGP, valued for its fragrance and thick skin; look for it in sweets, preserves, drinks and seasonal menus. Local tourism also highlights barbajuans (fried filled pastries), pichade (a tomato-and-onion flatbread), and poutine (the fry of anchovies and sardines, when legally and seasonally available). Nearby valleys add chestnuts, mushrooms, game and mountain cheeses. Do not expect every one of these dishes on every restaurant menu. Maison Gannac — Menton, 10 rue du Saint-Michel, and Domaine Gannac. The Menton citrus grower operates a central boutique and a hilltop farm shop with citrus products, including Menton lemon preserves and liqueur. The estate is outside the center; its operator lists bus access and shop schedules, so check transport and opening before setting out. This is a producer stop and edible-souvenir option, not a restaurant. Operator shop locations and hours · Producer and citrus products.
Mirazur — Menton, 30 avenue Aristide Briand. For a special-occasion meal, the operator offers a changing seasonal tasting menu shaped by its gardens and the local landscape, with online reservations. This is a high-budget, advance-planning choice; confirm the current menu format, prices, dates, dietary requests and total cost before booking. The hillside location above the sea also means you should plan the walk or taxi back to the station. Official restaurant and current menu · Address and contact.
One, two or three days of Riviera eating
One day in Nice: Start with coffee and a market stroll, split a socca and pissaladière snack in the Old Town, then have a reserved dinner of petits farcis, daube or barbajuans. Add tourte de blettes as dessert if available. This keeps the day walkable and gives you a taste of both street food and a full Niçoise meal.
Two days: Keep the first day in Nice. On day two, take the TER to Cannes for Marché Forville and a fish lunch, or to Antibes for the old town and a booked seafood meal. Choose one town: both excursions reward unhurried market time, and a dinner reservation should not depend on a tight same-day return connection.
Three days: Eat locally in Nice on day one, go west to Cannes or Antibes on day two, then east to Menton on day three for lemon products and a coastal or Italian-influenced meal. For the evening, either dine early and return by a train checked for your date or stay in Menton. Mirazur merits its own booking-centered evening and a taxi plan if you do not want to walk back uphill.
Getting between food stops
The TER coastal line serves Nice, Antibes, Cannes and Menton, making train trips practical without a car. SNCF publishes a line timetable valid through December 12, 2026, but departures vary by day and can change with works or disruption. Look up both outbound and return trains for your date, and check the station-to-market walk: Cannes’ station is inland from Forville, Antibes station is outside the old town, and Mirazur is uphill from Menton station. TER Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur schedules · Coastal line timetable through December 12, 2026.
Summer crowds can make stations, markets and beachside restaurants busy. Book popular tables, especially for bouillabaisse, a weekend dinner or a tasting menu. If you want to eat late in Cannes, Antibes or Menton, either stay overnight there or verify the last direct train before you sit down. For Menton producers or a hillside restaurant, confirm the last leg as carefully as the main train; a short map distance can involve a steep walk.
Dietary and ordering notes
Socca is made with chickpea flour, but shared surfaces and utensils may create cross-contact. Pissaladière traditionally uses anchovy or salted-fish paste; pan bagnat, market fish, bouillabaisse and poutine contain seafood. Barbajuans and petits farcis may contain cheese, egg, meat or wheat depending on the recipe. Tourte de blettes has savory and sweet variations and may include egg, dairy, wheat or nuts. Ask each kitchen about ingredients and allergens; do not infer that a traditional or vegetable-based dish is vegetarian, gluten-free or allergy-safe.
Markets and restaurant schedules vary by day and season. Check the operator’s current opening times, the market’s weekly closure day and the transport schedule before setting out. Tourist-office lists and restaurant websites are useful starting points, while direct confirmation is best for reservations, dish availability, prices and dietary needs.
Markets, menus and train schedules can change. Check current hours, reservations, train service and allergen information before you set out.
