Where to Stay in Phuket: Old Town, Patong and the South Coast

Choose a Phuket base by whether your days center on heritage streets, Patong’s busy beach district or the Kata–Karon coast, with current airport-bus links and direct hotel sites.

Travel guide

A compact carry-on and daypack beside a folded light jacket and umbrella, ready for a multi-district Phuket trip.

Phuket is a large island with a historic town, an airport at its northern end and separate resort districts along the west and south coasts. A hotel that suits a beach break may add unnecessary road transfers to an Old Town-focused visit; a town address does not make a beach day effortless. Start with the two or three places that matter most to your trip, then choose one base that makes those days simple. Check the exact property location and route before booking, because neighborhood names do not establish a hotel’s entrance, walking conditions or transfer time.

Phuket Old Town: heritage streets and local food

Choose Phuket Town when historic streets, local meals, museums and a city base matter more than waking beside a west-coast beach. The provincial government’s Old Town page describes the historic area around Thalang Road and nearby streets in Mueang District. Restaurants and older commercial streets can make this a useful first or final night, especially if your itinerary includes a town-focused food day. You will still need a separate transfer to visit Patong, Karon or Kata; do not treat a map’s straight-line distance as an easy walk.

The Memory at On On is an operator-published Old Town example at 19 Phang-Nga Road, Talat Yai. Its current site offers a direct booking route, guest-room information, a “Getting Here” page and contact details. The hotel describes its historic building and gives its own address; use the booking and contact pages to confirm room configuration, check-in, luggage and any access needs. Its Old Town location is the reason to compare it, not an assumption that its rooms or historic features suit every traveler.

For a short stay, the town is practical when your first full day will be spent nearby or when you prefer dinner and morning coffee without a beach transfer. If the main goal is swimming and resort time, compare the full journey from a town hotel to the coast before choosing it for the entire visit. Ask about steps, lift access and the route from curb to reception if those details matter; an older building’s public photographs do not confirm an accessible room or step-free route.

Patong: services, beach access and a lively setting

Patong is a busy west-coast beach district with a dense mix of accommodation, restaurants, shops and evening activity. The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes Patong as a developed beach area with accommodation, hospitals, shopping and restaurants. That concentration can help visitors who want services close by, while the resort district’s lively character may not fit a traveler seeking a quieter stay. Check the precise street and room orientation with the hotel if nightlife noise, road traffic or early bedtimes are concerns.

Holiday Inn Resort Phuket publishes its address as 52 Thaweewong Road, Patong Beach, and says Patong Beach is across the road. Its official site lists room categories including a Family Suite, a direct booking route, a Kids’ Club and children’s facilities. The hotel’s own published child and room terms distinguish children sharing a bed from extra-bed arrangements, so confirm the current conditions for your party rather than assuming a child stays free in any room. This example is worth comparing for families who want a full-service Patong base; check current occupancy, pool access, cancellation rules and the exact wing or room type before reserving.

Patong can work as a one-base choice if most of your plans are on the west coast. A beach address does not guarantee that every attraction, pier or dinner is close. Check the exact evening return plan before booking an excursion away from the district, and ask the property whether any transfer is offered for your specific booking rather than assuming a general hotel service includes it.

Kata and Karon: a south-coast beach base

Kata and Karon sit south of Patong on Phuket’s west-facing coast. The provincial tourism pages describe Kata’s two beaches and locate Karon in relation to Kata and Patong. Choose this area when beach time is central and you are comfortable arranging road transport for town visits or northern-island plans. Kata and Karon are separate neighborhoods; compare the address of the hotel, the beach access you intend to use, nearby dining and the route to the transport stops rather than treating the two names as one compact resort center.

The Old Phuket – Karon Beach Resort is one operator-listed property to compare in Karon. Its official booking page gives 192/36 Karon Road and provides its rooms and reservation route. Use the hotel’s current room and contact pages to confirm which wing or room category fits your group, and whether a walk or vehicle transfer is needed for your preferred beach entrance. The resort name does not by itself verify a step-free route, direct beach access or current room availability.

For families or travelers with mobility needs, confirm the complete route from the room to the street, pool, restaurant and beach: lifts, slopes, curbs, surface type, shade and any shuttle all matter more than a district label. Ask for the room’s exact sleeping layout and bathroom arrangement. If swimming is part of the plan, check local beach flags and current sea conditions with lifeguards or local authorities; a hotel booking page is not a swimming-safety source.

Arriving from Phuket International Airport

Phuket International Airport (HKT) is at the island’s north end. The airport authority lists two distinct public-bus options. Airport Bus FL.1 route 8411 runs between the airport and Phuket Town; the airport’s current page identifies the Exit 3 boarding direction and the operator’s contact details. Phuket Smart Bus is a different service, and the airport authority lists its route through the airport, Cherngtalay, Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai. The Smart Bus operator publishes current schedules and live vehicle tracking. Check both pages close to travel, then match the stop to your hotel; a route through a district does not prove it stops at the hotel entrance or that the service meets a late flight.

A public bus may suit a traveler with light luggage and a hotel close to a confirmed stop. With children, multiple bags, an early or late arrival, or a property away from the route, compare a taxi or a prearranged transfer. Confirm the pickup point, payment and destination directly with the airport or property. Phuket’s airport-to-resort journey is a road transfer; include time to collect bags and reach the pickup area before planning a timed activity.

If your itinerary also includes Bangkok, check the airport code on every flight and transfer. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is a Bangkok airport; Phuket International Airport is HKT. A booking into BKK does not mean you have arrived in Phuket or that a Phuket hotel can collect you there. For a Bangkok-to-Phuket connection, confirm the separate onward flight or overland travel segment, terminal, luggage handling and connection time with the airline and transport providers. The Phuket light-rail corridor shown in MRTA’s current project plan is future infrastructure, not a transit line to include in today’s itinerary; use currently listed buses and road transfers instead.

One night: stay near the next day’s priority

With one night, choose the base closest to your actual next commitment. For an Old Town food and heritage day, reserve a town hotel and avoid a same-evening coast transfer. For a beach day centered on Patong, compare a Patong address such as Holiday Inn Resort Phuket; for a Kata or Karon beach priority, stay in that area and check the hotel’s road access. If the one night is before a flight, compare the airport journey and departure time before favoring a resort district. Keep the hotel choice simple and confirm late check-in directly.

Two nights: keep one base and group the days

For two nights, stay in one district. A town base can support one Old Town day and one planned beach outing, but budget for both road legs and do not add distant stops casually. A Patong or Karon base can make two coast days easier, with Phuket Town as a deliberate separate visit. If the group’s priorities split between town and beach, compare a hotel near the bus route and current service hours, but a route map is only one part of the trip: the last mile and return service still need to work.

Three nights: use a two-cluster plan

Three nights allow two geographic clusters without changing hotels. From an Old Town base, devote one day to the historic center and another to one coastal area; reserve a third for whichever day depends most on weather or energy. From a beach base, keep two days on the chosen coast and use one day for the town or a southern excursion. A hotel move usually consumes time for packing, checkout and a new transfer, so switch only if it solves a specific early flight or makes two distinct plans materially easier. Treat this as three overnight stays only if your arrival and departure times actually require three nights.

Before you reserve

Compare direct hotel booking pages for the exact dates and room type. Confirm cancellation terms, room occupancy, bed configuration, lift and step-free access, bathroom layout, luggage storage, late arrival and any child policy directly with the property. Then check the current airport route, direction, final stop and service hours with the transport operator. For a beach stay, ask about the precise path to the beach and nearby food; for Old Town, check whether your planned excursions require multiple long road transfers. Room inventory, routes, traffic and property facilities change, so reconfirm them for your travel dates.
