Salzburg is compact enough that many visitors can walk between the Old Town, Mirabell Gardens and the river, but the right hotel area still changes the feel of a short stay. The main decision is whether you want the medieval lanes and evening atmosphere of the Altstadt, the gardens and station connections of the Neustadt, or the convenience of sleeping beside Salzburg Hauptbahnhof. A quieter outer neighborhood can work for repeat visitors or a hotel-centered stay, but it adds transit to a first visit. Choose by your arrival route, luggage, daily sights and need for a car.
Compare the main areas
Altstadt (Old Town): Stay here if your priority is walking to the Cathedral, Hohensalzburg Fortress, Getreidegasse, museums and evening restaurants. You can step out into the historic core early or return to the hotel between sights. Tradeoffs include busy lanes, limited vehicle access and a premium for a central historic address. Historic buildings may have stairs or room layouts that differ substantially; ask about lift access, entrance steps and the exact room route. If driving, read Salzburg’s current hotel access rules before arrival: access to downtown hotels now requires a booking confirmation and follows a designated hotel routing system.
Neustadt and Mirabell: Across the Salzach, around Mirabellplatz, this area balances a river crossing into the Old Town with easy access to Mirabell Palace and Gardens, cafés and the main station. It is a useful choice for visitors who want central walks without sleeping on the busiest tourist street. Check how close your hotel is to the bridge you plan to use; a central-looking map marker can still put you on the farther side of the river or a busy road.
Hauptbahnhof and Südtiroler Platz: Choose the station area for an early train, a late arrival, airport bus links or a short stop between cities. It has the most direct luggage logistics, though it lacks the historic-core setting. The Old Town remains reachable on foot or by city bus. If most sightseeing is in the center, compare the extra daily walk or rides against any room-rate savings.
Nonntal, Leopoldskron and outer neighborhoods: These areas can offer a calmer, residential feel or a hotel with gardens and a broader setting. They make sense when you are happy to use buses, want space and can manage the commute. Confirm the nearest stop, evening service and luggage route for your particular address. Do not pick an outer location based only on a low nightly price if you will travel back and forth several times each day.
Four hotels to compare
These hotels offer different lodging settings and are not a ranking or an availability promise. Compare the total price, cancellation terms, city tax, room category, breakfast, access, parking and exact transit route directly with each hotel for your dates.
- IMLAUER Palais Mirabell — Mirabellplatz: The operator describes this recently renovated historic palace hotel at Mirabellplatz 8, beside Mirabell Gardens and a short walk from the Old Town. It is a strong location for combining the gardens, Mozart Residence and river crossings, and the hotel lists its own restaurant and nearby IMLAUER dining. The operator describes the main station as about a 15-minute walk, with bus service from Mirabellplatz. If arriving by car, follow the hotel’s loading and garage instructions; its published route uses a separate loading address. Confirm current parking prices and room details. - Motel One Salzburg-Mirabell — Elisabethkai: On the Salzach at Elisabethkai 58–60, this modern hotel offers a riverbank location between the station and Old Town. The operator describes it as walkable to the historic center and notes a nearby bus stop and limited paid parking. It suits visitors who want a contemporary room and central access without staying in the narrowest lanes. Check room size and view category carefully, since the operator lists several room types and views vary. Official hotel.
- Hotel Salzburg-Hauptbahnhof — Südtiroler Platz: The operator places this hotel beside the main railway station at Südtiroler Platz 13. It is the practical choice for a late train arrival, early departure or an itinerary with repeated rail travel; the operator says the Old Town is reachable on foot or by public transport. This base trades historic character at the doorstep for easy transfers and station services. The hotel says its adjacent garage is at the Forum 1 shopping center and separately charged; confirm the current parking arrangement and whether your room needs suit your group. Official hotel information.
- Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron — Leopoldskron: This lakeside property at Leopoldskronstraße 56–58 is outside the immediate city-center cluster. It may suit travelers who value a quieter setting and hotel grounds, especially on a longer stay, but it adds a daily connection to the Old Town and station. Confirm the current room offering, dining, public transport, access and parking directly with the property; a beautiful setting is not the same as doorstep access to central sights. Airport, station and local mobility
Salzburg Airport and the main railway station have city-bus connections. Use Salzburg Verkehr’s current journey planner for the exact stop, route and last service to your hotel. If you arrive by train, verify the correct station exit and the hotel’s preferred luggage route; a short straight-line distance can include a busy crossing or bridge. For an airport arrival, compare the bus with an authorized taxi or prearranged transfer if you have bulky luggage, a late arrival or several travelers.
Many overnight visitors receive the Salzburg Verkehr Guest Mobility Ticket from their accommodation. The operator describes it as valid on public transport within Salzburg province for the stay, including city and regional buses and trains; the ticket is issued by the accommodation, and separate fares are needed for travel beyond the province. The ticket does not replace separate admission or transport for every attraction, cable car or boat. Ask your hotel when it will issue the ticket; Salzburg Verkehr says a valid ticket is required before boarding, though advance check-in may allow use on the airport bus. Check the current ticket terms and operator notices before setting out. Salzburg Verkehr Guest Mobility Ticket FAQ.
If arriving by car, check Salzburg’s official hotel access rules before entering the center. The city tourism office says downtown hotel access requires a booking confirmation and directs drivers along designated hotel routes. Contact the property in advance for the correct approach, loading point, garage, height limit and parking charges. A car is rarely helpful for a stay centered on Salzburg’s historic core; a station-side or airport-side garage can be more practical if your trip continues into the countryside.
Fit your base to one, two or three days
One day: Stay in the Altstadt or around Mirabell if the main goal is a compact walk through the Old Town, gardens and riverfront. A late arrival or early departure can make the station area the better one-night choice. Leave the hotel, store bags if possible and put timed attractions after arrival rather than at the edge of a tight transfer.
Two days: Keep one central base. Use day one for the Cathedral precinct, Getreidegasse and a booked fortress or museum visit; use day two for Mirabell, the Mozart Residence and a slower meal or concert. Neustadt/Mirabell is a balanced base for both days. The Altstadt shortens evening walks, while the station gives more convenient onward travel. There is little benefit to switching hotels during a two-night city visit.
Three days: Add a third day for an outlying attraction, a neighborhood visit or a regional excursion, and choose lodging near the city-bus network or the station if you will make an early start. Confirm whether the Guest Mobility Ticket covers the exact route; travel beyond the province or on special lifts and boats may require separate tickets. If taking a day trip, book the transport first and avoid placing the final attraction close to the return departure.
Booking and access questions
Before reserving, check whether breakfast and city tax are included, whether the rate can be cancelled, how room sizes differ, and whether the hotel can store bags. Ask about lift access, step-free entrance, roll-in shower or other specific needs; “central” and “accessible” do not describe the same thing. For heritage properties, ask whether the booked room is in the main building and whether there are steps between reception, lift and room.
If you plan to drive, arrange the arrival instructions before the travel day and keep the booking confirmation available. If you plan to rely on transit, check the route from your hotel to the station, airport or evening venue, including the last return. For a first visit centered on the main sights, a central base usually saves more time than it costs. Choose the Altstadt for historic surroundings, Mirabell for a central balance, the station for transfers, or Leopoldskron for a quieter hotel-centered stay.
