San José can be a cultural stop, a first or last night, or a base before heading elsewhere in Costa Rica. The historic center groups the National Theatre, Central Market, museums and Avenida Central; nearby districts change the daily logistics. Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) is in Alajuela, outside San José, so compare the transfer and your plans before choosing a hotel.
Choose your base
- Historic center: Convenient for Plaza de la Cultura, National Theatre, Gold Museum, shops and Central Market. Streets vary in activity; confirm arrival instructions and room orientation if noise matters. Plan the airport trip separately.
- Barrio Amón, Otoya and Aranjuez: Northern/northeastern central districts suit museum and restaurant plans near downtown. Exact walks and evening routes depend on destination; check local guidance.
- Paseo Colón and La Sabana: West of the core, useful for park, stadium, meetings or western-city plans, with added travel to central museums. SJO still requires a road transfer.
- Barrio California: Casa 69 lists an address near the National Museum and airport pickup by arrangement. Confirm current terms and compare precise location to your plans.
- San Pedro: Separate eastern district for University of Costa Rica or longer stays; farther from Avenida Central. Check the exact transit trip.

One, two or three days
- One day: Choose the historic center for National Theatre, Gold Museum, Central Market and central streets. For an airport overnight, choose around confirmed transfer arrangements and flight time; SJO is outside San José.
- Two days: Keep one central hotel. Pair the core sights with a visit to the National Museum and Jade Museum, or spend the day in Aranjuez or at La Sabana. Check museum calendars.
- Three days: Keep one base; use the extra day for a neighborhood visit or separately booked Central Valley trip. Confirm hotel pickup coverage.
SJO and city transport
The airport is in Alajuela. Its official transport page lists bus terminals, shuttles, rental cars and taxis, and says orange taxis are airport-authorized. It links TUASA Alajuela and several San José terminals, but that does not mean a bus serves your hotel or arrival time. Check operator route, departure point and hours; plan the final connection with luggage. For late arrivals or several bags, prearrange a shuttle or licensed airport taxi and confirm fare terms.
Urban buses and INCOFER commuter rail serve some regional trips. The airport transport page lists bus, shuttle, taxi and rental-car options; confirm a separate connection to any rail station before relying on the train. Check the current rail route and service day; an Alajuela train still needs a road or bus connection to SJO. Allow traffic flexibility and avoid tight flight connections based on unverified estimates.
