Choose a Santorini base by what you want outside your door. Fira is the central bus hub and a useful base for moving between villages. Oia and Imerovigli put you on the caldera rim, where lodging may involve stairs and cliff paths. Kamari and Perissa are seaside settlements beside black-sand beaches. These locations offer different landscapes and daily routines: a caldera view does not mean beach access, and a beach stay does not put you near the cliffside villages.
Choose your base
- Fira: Consider it for a short stay, an island-wide itinerary or a trip relying on public buses. KTEL routes connect Fira with Oia, Imerovigli/Firostefani, Kamari, Perissa, the airport and Athinios ferry port. You still need a local walk or transfer from the station to your lodging; a central address does not guarantee step-free access.
- Oia: Consider it if you want more time in the northwestern village and to start or end the day there. Oia is northwest of Fira and has a direct KTEL bus. Caldera lanes and lodging entrances can involve steps. Confirm the route from vehicle drop-off to room and luggage help. Trips to other parts of the island add a bus leg to Fira.
- Imerovigli: Consider this caldera-side base between Fira and Oia if views and time at the property matter most. KTEL lists an Imerovigli–Firostefani–Fira route; confirm the closest stop and return times. Some cliff-top hotels have substantial stairs. Grace Hotel says its entrance requires several flights and may not suit guests with restricted mobility.
- Kamari: Consider this seaside village for black sand, cafes, restaurants and shops along the coast. KTEL connects Kamari with Fira and the airport. It is on the eastern shore, away from the caldera rim, so plan transit for Oia, Imerovigli and caldera activities.
- Perissa and Perivolos: Consider this southeastern coast for beach time, swimming and water sports. The Santorini Port Authority describes Perissa’s black-sand beach and food, drink and water-sport options; KTEL lists service from Fira. Allow time for cross-island trips and check the current timetable.
Five lodging examples to compare
These are location examples, not rankings or endorsements. Operator pages confirm names and locations. Compare matching dates, total price, room layout, access, cancellation terms, parking or transfers and extra charges directly with each property. Maps are for orientation only.
- Aressana Spa Hotel & Suites — Fira: Its operator lists the hotel in Fira. Compare it if you want a base near town services; ask about the exact route from the bus station and steps on the way to your room. Official contact page · Map: Aressana Spa Hotel & Suites.
- Canaves Oia Suites — Oia: The operator places the suites at Oia’s entrance beside the marble path and says an elevator serves almost all hotel levels and main facilities. Ask which route and room setup apply to your booking. Official contact and address · Access details · Map: Canaves Oia Suites.
- Grace Hotel Santorini — Imerovigli: The operator confirms its Imerovigli location and says the cliff-top entrance is reached by several flights of concrete steps; it may not suit guests with restricted mobility. It lists approximate transfer times from Fira, Oia, airport and port; reconfirm for your arrival. Official arrival and access information · Map: Grace Hotel Santorini.
- Santorini Kastelli Resort — Kamari: The operator lists its Kamari address, a short distance from Kamari beach, and stated distances of 6 km to the airport, 10 km to Athinios port and 10 km to Fira. Confirm transfers and the exact relation to the beach and bus stop. Official resort information · Map: Santorini Kastelli Resort.
- Petra Nera Hotel — Perissa: The operator lists the property in Perissa. Compare it for a southeastern beach-area stay; verify the walk to the beach and KTEL stop and the room and bathroom setup. Official location page · Map: Petra Nera Hotel.
One, two or three days
- One day: Choose Fira for a central starting point for bus connections, or Oia if most of the day is in the northwestern village. Avoid several far-apart stops around a tight transfer. For a beach-first day, base in Kamari or Perissa and spend the day locally.
- Two days: Keep one base and group plans geographically: Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli on one day, Oia on another; or pair a beach day with a caldera-village day. Check bus times before relying on a late return. Discover Greece estimates the Fira–Oia caldera walk at about 10.5 km and 3–5 hours, so treat it as a substantial outdoor walk.
- Three days: A single Fira base can simplify bus day trips. For a caldera-view stay, choose Oia or Imerovigli and plan other stops around transit or confirmed transfers. A beach base makes beach time simpler; allow dedicated travel time for a caldera day. A hotel change can reduce backtracking on a longer stay, but factor in packing, checkout and transfer time.
Airport, ferry port and buses
The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority locates Santorini Airport in Monolithos, 6 km from Fira. The airport bus-access page points visitors to KTEL. KTEL lists connections from Fira to Oia, Kamari, Perissa, Imerovigli/Firostefani, the airport and Athinios. The summer timetable and fares are date-sensitive; check the operator’s current information for service direction, last bus and seasonal changes. Do not assume a bus will depart immediately after a flight or ferry arrival.
Athinios is the ferry port, separate from Fira’s old port for cruise and excursion boats. The Santorini Port Authority describes the old-port climb to Fira by cable car or 587 steps. For a ferry, confirm transfer to your lodging and whether a bus fits the sailing time. For a cruise tender at the old port, account for steep access and queues; it is not the ferry terminal.
Steps, slopes and room access
Caldera lodging can have stairs between road, reception, room, pool and dining areas. “Cave-style” describes architecture, not accessibility. Ask the property to confirm in writing a step-free route from vehicle drop-off to room, number and type of steps, handrails, elevator coverage, doorway and bathroom details, luggage handling and whether your exact room category has the features you need. Check access to restaurants, pools and public areas too. An elevator may not cover all outside routes: Canaves says its lift reaches almost all hotel levels; Grace identifies several entrance steps.
For a Fira old-port excursion, check current cable-car operation and the steep walking alternative. Discover Greece describes the Fira–Oia walk as 10.5 km and 3–5 hours; volcanic sections can be slippery and hard. Kamari and Perissa provide a different, beach-side setting. Check conditions and access at the specific beach entrance rather than assuming a smooth or step-free route.
Before you book
Compare total prices for matching dates and room type, including taxes, breakfast, transfers and cancellation terms. Confirm seasonal opening, late-arrival arrangements, luggage storage, noise and access to the exact room. Ask whether a transfer meets your airport or Athinios ferry arrival and carries luggage to the room. Recheck KTEL schedules and beach or excursion access shortly before travel; no connection is guaranteed.
