Where to Stay in Seoul: Neighborhoods, Hotels and Airport Connections

Compare Insadong, Hongdae and Gongdeok as Seoul bases, with verified hotel examples, family-room questions and airport-to-hotel planning.

Travel guide

Two travelers organize a small bag and rolling suitcase in a plain waiting area

In Seoul, hotel choice is a transport decision as much as a room decision. The city is large, airport routes reach different neighborhoods, and a “central” address may still mean a walk with bags, a transfer or a hill. For a first visit, compare the day’s main neighborhoods with the hotel’s actual station and airport connections. The three named examples below are verified property listings; they are not endorsements, availability guarantees or claims about an individual room’s accessibility.

Choose a base by the shape of your trip

Insadong and Jongno suit visitors who want to walk among central historic districts, traditional shopping streets and museums. NINE TREE BY PARNAS SEOUL INSADONG publishes its address as 49 Insadong-gil and lists nearby transport on its official hotel finder. The operator’s room page lists Family Twin, Family Kids and Quad Suite categories, among others, as well as a “Handicap Double” room category. Treat those labels as a prompt to ask about the exact layout, bed setup, bathroom, thresholds, lift route and equipment for your dates; a category name alone does not establish that a room meets a particular access need. This location works best when your plan concentrates on central Seoul. It is less convenient if most of your days are in Hongdae or Gangnam.

Hongdae and Mapo are useful when you plan to spend evenings around Hongik University, Yeonnam-dong or other western Seoul areas, or want a base along the airport railway. L7 HONGDAE by LOTTE is at 141 Yanghwa-ro according to Visit Seoul’s hotel listing; confirm current property details and booking through the operator’s L7 Hongdae page. Hongdae is not the quietest choice for every traveler: compare the exact room location and your preferred evening atmosphere with the hotel before booking. Being near a rail station also does not mean every attraction is a direct ride; map the transfer count and walking legs for your own itinerary.

Gongdeok and Mapo can work as a practical interchange base for travelers who value airport-rail access and connections across the city. GLAD MAPO’s official English site gives its address as 92 Mapo-daero, Mapo-gu and lists room types including Deluxe Twin and Jumbo Twin. Its location page identifies Gongdeok Station approaches and rail lines, including the Airport Railroad. Families who need separate beds can ask whether the currently offered room type fits their group, but do not assume a named twin category guarantees extra floor space or a particular child setup. This area may be less atmospheric than a small traditional lane, but the interchange can simplify luggage days; decide based on the real station exit and hotel entrance rather than a map pin alone.

Compare access before confirming a room

Use each property’s own booking and location page to verify your dates, occupancy, bed configuration, cancellation terms and any request for a cot or accessible room. NINE TREE says certain options require a prior request; contact the hotel early and ask it to confirm in writing what it can provide. At GLAD MAPO, the operator lists several room categories, but the page does not promise every combination for every date. L7’s official profile can help establish the address; ask its staff about room and access questions not answered on the current operator page. Never treat a photo, room name or third-party listing as a guarantee of step-free access.

Seoul’s sidewalks can include slopes, curbs, construction and busy crossings. Check the route between the hotel door and the station entrance, including the exact exit. The city’s subway accessibility facilities table lists station-level elevators and other features; it does not verify the entire hotel-to-platform path or every interchange. For a wheelchair, mobility aid, stroller or heavy luggage, ask the hotel which entrance and route it recommends, then verify station facilities on each leg. Where a continuous step-free route is essential, use the operator’s detailed accessibility information and confirm current lift operation instead of relying on a general description.

Families should compare sleeping arrangements rather than selecting only by neighborhood. Request the precise bed count, whether beds can be moved, the room’s maximum occupancy, cot availability and any extra charge directly from the property. Ask about adjoining rooms only if the hotel confirms that configuration for your reservation; adjoining is not the same as guaranteed. For younger children, proximity to food and a shorter return after an evening out may matter more than fitting one extra attraction into the day. Keep the hotel’s address in Korean and English for a taxi or navigation app, and agree on a meeting point inside the lobby if family members return separately.

Arrival from Incheon and the return journey

The Seoul Metropolitan Government’s airport-arrival page outlines airport limousine bus, AREX and taxi options. The AREX all-stop/local train serves Hongik University and Gongdeok before Seoul Station. The AREX express train runs nonstop between Incheon Airport and Seoul Station, so it does not stop at either of those neighborhoods. Choose the service that matches your hotel, and recheck the AREX operator’s current service information. Airport buses serve selected hotel districts, with routes and stops that can change. Check the airport bus operator’s live schedule for your terminal, route, stop and date. The right choice depends on where you are staying, luggage, arrival time and the transfer path—not on a universal fastest mode.

At the airport, follow signs to the rail station or the correct limousine stop and confirm the service destination before boarding. For a hotel in Insadong, compare a rail journey to a central station plus onward connection with a bus that serves your hotel area; for Hongdae or Gongdeok, the airport railway may align more directly, but the final walk and hotel entrance still matter. If you have bulky luggage, young children or a late arrival, a taxi or prearranged vehicle may reduce transfers, though road travel depends on traffic and the pickup point. Do not assume the driver can identify an English-only hotel name; carry the full address.

For departure, repeat the check rather than reusing the arrival plan. Verify which terminal your airline uses, the service’s first/last departure and current stop, then allow slack for boarding, traffic, crowds and airport procedures. A hotel’s proximity to Gongdeok, Hongik University or a city rail hub can be helpful, but it cannot eliminate the need to check the day’s timetable and your exact airport terminal.

One, two or three nights: a simple base plan

One night: choose the neighborhood that best fits the next morning’s departure or the single area you want to see. Arrive, check in and eat nearby. Do not cross Seoul for a famous dinner after a long flight. On the following morning, use the hotel’s verified route to your onward transport.

Two nights: Insadong/Jongno makes a compact central base for a palace-and-market day plus a second day around Myeongdong, Namdaemun or another central district. If your priority is Hongdae or an airport-rail connection, stay west and accept a planned subway ride to the historic core. A single base avoids repacking and makes a midday rest possible for children or travelers pacing their walking.

Three nights: keep one hotel and divide the days by geography: central historic Seoul; the western Hongdae/Mapo area; then a flexible return to a favorite district or a farther excursion after checking transit. Gongdeok or Hongdae can reduce some western connections, while Insadong puts the central sights closer. Neither is “best” for every route. Plot actual destinations, check service on your dates and avoid assuming that a point-to-point map distance reflects time through a large station.

Booking checklist

Before paying, compare total room occupancy and bedding, breakfast inclusion if it matters, luggage storage rules, check-in time, cancellation terms, and whether the exact room category is still offered. Confirm a cot or access feature directly with the hotel; record the response and the room type. Check current construction or route notices for the nearest station and airport service. For a family or mobility-sensitive trip, plan the door-to-door journey—including airport curb, station lift, sidewalks and hotel entrance—and keep a backup taxi option. These checks turn a convenient district name into a realistic stay plan without assuming that a hotel or station is accessible in every way.
