The pilgrimage to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi begins in Katra, in Jammu and Kashmir, and climbs to the shrine’s Holy Cave in the Trikuta Hills. For devotees, the goal is darshan of the Goddess in the cave shrine; the Shrine Board describes the holy forms as the three pindies. Katra is both the arrival town and the natural planning base, while Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat and Bhawan offer Shrine Board lodging subject to current availability. Plan around registration, the route and your own ability to complete a mountain pilgrimage.
Plan the yatra before you travel

Every pilgrim needs the Shrine Board’s Yatra Access Card (RFID card) before beginning the yatra. The Board’s current portal asks online registrants to collect the card at an authorized registration counter and show their booking slip; the location list includes Katra bus stand, railway station and Niharika Complex, among other counters. Use the Board’s own site for registration, accommodation, helicopter and other service bookings. It states that it has not authorized private travel agents to book its services. Keep the access card with you and follow the current checkpoint instructions. Registration is a permission to proceed; it is separate from accommodation, helicopter seats, battery cars and any other booked service.
The Shrine Board identifies the Holy Cave at Bhawan as the yatra’s destination. It also describes Adhkuwari and the Garbh Joon cave as part of the local religious account. Bhairon Nath Temple is a separate onward visit above Bhawan; the Board’s FAQ says its darshan takes place after darshan at the Holy Cave. Check the current operational status of the Bhawan–Bhairo ropeway and its timings before building it into your day. Service can depend on weather and operations, and a ropeway ticket does not replace yatra registration.
Choose your route and access arrangements

The traditional yatra is on foot from Katra to Bhawan. The Shrine Board’s current visitor guidance describes a paved route and an alternate Himkoti route; it also notes that shortcuts and unmarked trails are prohibited. Its published distance page gives about 13 km from Katra to Bhawan by the main route, but treat this as orientation rather than a promise about the route available on your date. Changes in weather, security, crowd management and maintenance can require temporary halts or diversions. Check Board and district advisories shortly before departure, especially during heavy rain or landslide alerts.
The Board lists a helicopter service between Katra and Sanjichhat. Sanjichhat is not the cave itself, so plan the onward segment between the helipad and Bhawan, along with return timing. Helicopter tickets are date-specific, subject to availability and weather, and need to be booked through the Board’s official channel. Review the live sector instructions, baggage limits, reporting point, cancellation and refund procedures before buying. Never assume a flight guarantees a darshan slot or an effortless route onward.
The Board describes a battery-car service on the Himkoti track between Adhkuwari and Bhawan, with service subject to availability and eligibility rules. Its current pages also direct pilgrims to official online booking. This segment does not cover the full route from Katra. If you or someone in your party needs assistance, ask the Shrine Board which current service is suitable, who may use it, how a companion is handled and where it starts and ends. The Board’s service listing is not proof that the entire journey is accessible or that seats will be available at the time you need them. Do not book a yatra schedule that assumes a mobility service without a confirmed reservation and a backup plan.
For pony, porter or palanquin services, the Shrine Board advises pilgrims to use registered providers, confirm the approved rate on official signage and note the provider’s registration details. Check current restrictions along each track before hiring: the alternate path has different operating conditions from the older route. Avoid accepting unsolicited offers at the station or relying on a verbal promise of access. The route is a sustained uphill pilgrimage, so think about health, weather, footwear and rest before deciding whether to walk the full distance.
Travel to Katra
Katra is reached by rail and road, with Jammu as the larger air gateway. The Shrine Board’s FAQ describes taxis from Jammu Airport and Jammu railway station, as well as bus links between Jammu and Katra. Use current Indian Railways, airline and bus schedules to make the connection; the frequency and journey time depend on your date and operator. If you arrive in Jammu late, plan an overnight stay or a prearranged transfer rather than assuming you can connect immediately. Katra’s railway station places you in town, but you still need to collect your RFID access card and check where your yatra registration begins.
From Katra’s station or bus area, use your confirmed hotel transfer or a licensed local taxi to reach your lodging. On the day you start, travel to the correct route entrance with enough time to clear registration and security. Keep the yatra card, identification and any service confirmation accessible. The Shrine Board’s FAQ says video cameras and other electronic equipment are not allowed on the track; follow its current prohibited-items guidance and leave unnecessary luggage at your hotel or an official cloakroom. Travel light: Board services provide food and drink at points along the way, but check what is open and what is allowed for the current route.
Pick a practical base

Katra is the best all-round base for most visitors because it puts lodging, the rail station, registration counters and the trailhead area in the same town. Staying here the night before gives you room to collect your card, check the weather and start when ready. For a slower itinerary or a planned overnight on the route, compare Shrine Board accommodation at Katra, Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat or Bhawan, but only if the live booking confirms the exact place and date. These are locations along the yatra, not interchangeable hotel neighborhoods.
- Shrine Board accommodation: the current portal lists rooms and dormitories at Jammu, Katra, Bhawan, Adhkuwari and Sanjichhat. Use the official booking path and check which counter handles your check-in. A room is not confirmed until you have a valid reservation.
- Lemon Tree Hotel, Katra: its official page places it near Katra railway station and lists rooms and the Citrus Café. This is a useful location to compare if you are arriving by rail; confirm your actual transfer and the hotel’s current check-in terms directly.
- Vivanta Katra, Vaishno Devi: the hotel describes its Jammu–Katra Highway setting and says it is about fifteen minutes from the railway station. Compare the route and transfer arrangement for your own arrival time, then verify room details, rates and cancellation terms with the hotel.
Choose based on the details that affect your yatra: station pickup, a meal before departure, secure luggage storage, check-in after returning and the ability to rest. If you book a room at Bhawan or Sanjichhat, coordinate the uphill route and arrival time with the accommodation conditions. Do not assume a hotel or Board room booking includes transport, darshan priority or route assistance.
Food along the route and in Katra

The Shrine Board says it runs Bhojanalayas at Katra, Bhawan, Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat and Jammu, and its official homepage lists free langar at Tarakote, Sanjichhat and Bhairon Ji. These are practical points to consider while planning meal breaks, but check the live Board notices for current service and access conditions. Carry only food and drink allowed under current instructions. Leave extra time for eating and rest rather than treating the yatra as a timed march.
In Katra, the hotel restaurants below provide a pre-yatra meal or a return meal with published contact channels. Citrus Café at Lemon Tree Hotel describes itself as an all-vegetarian, multi-cuisine restaurant and publishes its operating hours on the property page. Mynt at Vivanta Katra is listed as a fully vegetarian, multi-cuisine restaurant; its page provides meal periods and direct contact details. Confirm the current menu, opening hours, reservation needs, price and allergy handling before traveling. If you want a simple meal before the climb, ask the property what is available at the time you expect to leave instead of assuming the published general hours match a special service day.
A one-day yatra
Arrive in Katra the previous evening if you can. Collect or verify your RFID Yatra Access Card, check the route and weather notices, and prepare only what you need for the climb. Start the yatra at a time that fits the current registration and checkpoint guidance. Keep the day focused on reaching Bhawan, darshan and a safe return or confirmed overnight stay. Add Bhairon Ji only if the route, your energy and current ropeway or walking arrangements make it sensible. Do not promise yourself a particular return train or flight without allowing for the full trek and changing queues.
A two-day yatra
Use day one to reach Katra, check in and complete the access-card and route preparations. Rest and eat before the ascent. Spend day two on the yatra, leaving time for darshan and the return journey. If you have confirmed Board lodging at Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat or Bhawan, let that reservation shape the stages rather than trying to cover every segment in one push. A day split gives more flexibility, but does not remove the need to check the accommodation’s reporting rules and current access.
A three-day yatra
For three days, arrive and settle in Katra on the first. On the second, travel toward Bhawan at a measured pace with planned rest and food stops; use only a confirmed mobility or transport service. After darshan, stay overnight at a reserved Board facility if that fits your route and room confirmation. Use day three for Bhairon Ji and the descent, or for a slower return to Katra and recovery, depending on the current route and your fitness. Travelers who are not staying on the hill can instead reserve day two for the complete yatra and day three for rest before onward travel. These are flexible frameworks, not time estimates or guarantees of service.
Respect the route and confirm changing details
Follow the prescribed path, obey Shrine Board and police instructions, and stop if a temporary halt or diversion is announced. Check the Board’s advisories for weather and track conditions, and postpone if authorities issue an alert that makes travel unsafe. Use official counters and current receipts for Board services. The Shrine Board warns against unauthorized booking agents and advises pilgrims to travel light; it also says no individual is authorized to collect donations on its behalf.
- Confirm your yatra registration, RFID collection counter and checkpoint instructions.
- Check the live route status, weather alerts, ropeway or helicopter operation, and any reserved mobility service.
- Verify hotel check-in and transfer arrangements and whether your selected restaurant will be open at your meal time.
- Carry essential medication and identification, and select your route according to your fitness and current medical advice.
- Keep darshan, transport and lodging as separate confirmations; one booking does not imply another service.
Service schedules, availability, route access, accommodation and food arrangements may change. Recheck the Shrine Board and the relevant transport or hotel pages shortly before your visit.
