Venice eating has two useful modes: small bites and a glass of wine at a bacaro, or a seated meal built around Venetian and lagoon dishes. Cicchetti are small savory bites, often displayed at the counter; a bacaro is a casual wine bar or tavern where people stop for them and an ombra (a small glass of wine). A few stops can make an informal lunch or aperitivo, but portions and service differ, so ask whether an item is priced individually and whether there is table service. The City of Venice’s tourism portal describes cicchetti and the bacaro tradition alongside local dishes in its Venice food guide.
What to taste
Sarde in saor is fried sardine marinated with sweet-and-sour onions, vinegar, raisins and pine nuts. The preservation style suits the city’s maritime history; it is commonly served as a starter or cicchetto. It contains fish, and recipes can include nuts. Baccalà mantecato is salted or dried cod whipped with oil into a creamy spread, often served on bread or polenta. Despite the name, Venetian baccalà commonly refers to stockfish; confirm the preparation and allergens with the kitchen.
Risotto di gò is made with lagoon grass goby, while risotto al nero di seppia gets its dark color from cuttlefish ink. Bigoli in salsa is thick pasta with an onion and fish sauce, traditionally anchovy or sardine; check whether the version uses fish. Fegato alla veneziana pairs thinly sliced liver with onions. These are substantial seated dishes rather than quick snacks. The official tourism guide also highlights risi e bisi, a spring pea-and-rice dish with a thick, soup-like consistency, and castraùre, the first tender buds of Sant’Erasmo’s purple artichokes, usually appearing in spring.
Season and catch matter. Fresh lagoon seafood, artichokes and market produce change; a dish associated with Venice may be missing from a given menu or prepared with a different recipe. Ask what is available today and whether the listed fish is from the lagoon or elsewhere if provenance matters to you. A seafood-focused menu is not automatically suitable for allergies or other dietary needs.

Rialto and San Polo: market-side bites
The Rialto market area sits in San Polo, around Campo de la Pescaria and Campo de le Becarie. Venice’s tourism portal lists the fish market Tuesday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the fruit-and-vegetable market Monday through Saturday; hours may change on holidays. A morning market visit pairs naturally with a bacaro stop or a booked lunch nearby. The lanes around Rialto are compact but busy, and the market is a working place: leave room for vendors and local shoppers.
Cantina Do Spade — San Polo, near Rialto. The operator describes fried appetizers to enjoy standing at the counter, a Venetian menu that follows seasonal ingredients, and daily specials; it lists its address as San Polo 859/860. This is a useful lead for an informal cicchetti stop, with the practical caveat that the daily menu is not fully represented online. Ask the host what is available and check current service details before going. Official menu and address.
Osteria Bancogiro — Campo San Giacometto, San Polo. Beside Rialto Bridge and the market, the operator describes a seasonal regional restaurant menu shaped by nearby market produce. This is a more substantial seated option than a quick counter stop; consult its current seasonal menu and booking/contact details for the meal you have in mind. Official site, location and menu.
Dorsoduro: cicchetti and a quieter walk
Dorsoduro’s southern waterfront and museum district make a good area for an afternoon-to-evening walk. The lanes around the Zattere and squero boatyards are a short walk from Campo Santa Margherita, though bridges and crowded passages make map distance an underestimate of travel time.
Osteria al Squero — Dorsoduro 943/944. The operator’s menu describes a changing selection of fish, meat and vegetable cicchetti, fried snacks, small sandwiches and regional wines; its dedicated cicchetti page also lists crostini with cheeses, cured meats and vegetables. It is a compact bacaro stop, so expect limited indoor space and check current opening hours. Current menu and hours · Operator cicchetti details and address.
Cantine del Vino già Schiavi — Dorsoduro 992. This wine shop and bacaro lists cicchetti recipes on its operator site and gives current hours from Monday to Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., closed Sunday. It is a counter-focused stop suited to an aperitivo or light meal; check the live site before going. Official cicchetti page, address and hours.
San Marco and Santa Croce: a seated Venetian meal or quick stop
San Marco is convenient after the main sights, while Santa Croce and the Tolentini area sit near Piazzale Roma and the railway approach. Eating in or around St Mark’s Square requires following the city’s public-space rules; the official district guidance prohibits eating or drinking while sitting on the ground, on steps, bridges, monuments and other listed structures. Choose a café, restaurant or permitted seating instead.
Osteria Al Bacareto — San Samuele, San Marco. This operator specializes in traditional Venetian food and lists baccalà, stockfish, squid in ink, sarde in saor and liver, served with white polenta, as well as cicchetti. Its published service pattern includes a daytime restaurant window, an afternoon pause, and evening bar service; check the live page before planning around it. Official dishes, hours and address.
Lido: a seafood outing beyond the historic center
The Lido is a separate island reached by vaporetto, so allow for boat time in both directions and check the current timetable. It makes sense when the beach, film-festival area or an overnight stay already brings you there; it is not an effortless add-on between central sights.
Osteria al Mercà — Lido, Via Dandolo 17. The operator lists cicchetti such as octopus, sarde in saor and baccalà, plus a frequently renewed seafood menu that follows season and catch. It publishes lunch and dinner windows and notes its proximity to a vaporetto stop. Check the live menu, boat schedule and reservation details before making the crossing. Official menu context, address and hours.
One, two or three days of eating
One day: Visit Rialto in the morning if the market is open, then make lunch a few cicchetti at a counter such as Do Spade or a booked seated meal at Bancogiro. For dinner, choose one classic—perhaps sarde in saor, baccalà or cuttlefish-ink risotto—at a restaurant whose current menu confirms it. Keep an eye on the clock: a string of bacari can fill a meal, while some kitchens use defined lunch and dinner service windows.
Two days: Pair the Rialto market and San Polo with a lunch or cicchetti stop on day one, then cross to Dorsoduro for a Squero snack and a stroll along the Zattere. On day two, use San Marco or Santa Croce for a seated meal and compare a traditional dish with seasonal seafood. If you are already planning a Lido visit, place Osteria al Mercà there rather than adding a separate crossing just to eat.
Three days: Give Rialto a morning, Dorsoduro an aperitivo, and one evening to a longer Venetian meal. Use the remaining day for an area or island already on your sightseeing route. In spring, look for risi e bisi and castraùre; at other times, ask about the day’s fish and market produce. Avoid making every meal a seafood feast: a small cicchetti lunch can balance a more substantial dinner.
Practical notes
Bacari can be crowded and may have little seating. At the counter, point to the cicchetti you want and ask about prices, ingredients and whether you should pay before or after ordering; practices vary. A small glass of house wine is often called an ombra, while spritz is a common aperitivo choice. At a seated restaurant, check whether the menu is seasonal, whether reservations are accepted, and whether a listed fish dish is available that day. A posted opening time does not always mean the kitchen is serving meals throughout that period.
Acqua alta is temporary high tide, not a permanent barrier to getting around. The City of Venice says designated pedestrian routes and raised walkways operate up to a stated tide level, while some boat routes may change; conditions vary by neighborhood and pavement height. Check the city’s tide forecast on the day, especially before timing a meal around a long walk or vaporetto ride. Wear shoes you can walk in and keep a flexible route. City guidance on high water and routes.
Fish, shellfish, gluten, dairy, nuts and eggs can appear in cicchetti and traditional dishes; sauces and shared kitchen equipment add further uncertainty. Ask the venue directly about ingredients and cross-contact if you have an allergy or dietary restriction. No restaurant listed here guarantees a dietary accommodation. Venue details and menus were checked against current official tourism and operator pages on September 27, 2026. They are practical examples, not rankings or reports of personal visits.
