At a glance

  • Route: Budapest (Hungary), Osijek area (Croatia), Novi Sad and Belgrade (Serbia), the Iron Gates gorge, Vidin and Rousse (Bulgaria), then Bucharest (Romania). Representative; confirm on your booking.
  • Length: about 10 days including a hotel night in Bucharest, plus one hotel night in Budapest before boarding.
  • Five countries, several currencies: forint (HUF), euro (Croatia), Serbian dinar (RSD), Romanian leu (RON), and Bulgaria's status unconfirmed as of 2026-10-17 (BNB fixed rate 1.95583 lev per euro; confirm on bnb.bg).
  • Passport stamps to expect: Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania. Serbia is outside the EU.
  • Best months: late April to early June and September to mid October.
  • Start airport: Budapest (BUD). End airport: Bucharest Henri Coanda (OTP).
  • Budapest public transport single ticket: 500 HUF .
  • Big mistake to avoid: booking a flight out of Bucharest for the morning of disembarkation.

The route in one paragraph

You board in Budapest and spend two nights aboard there, after one hotel night before boarding, so you see the city without rushing. The ship then slips downstream to eastern Croatia for a quiet day around Osijek, crosses into Serbia for the baroque calm of Novi Sad and its hilltop fortress, and gives Belgrade a full day where the Sava meets the Danube. Then comes the high point: a day of scenic cruising through the Iron Gates, where the river squeezes between Serbia and Romania. After a Bulgarian morning at Vidin's medieval fortress and a stop at Rousse, you reach the Romanian border at Giurgiu and take the road to Bucharest for the finale.

When to go

Late April through early June is green and mild, with long evenings. September and early October bring warm days, harvest food and softer light. July and August can be hot, and river levels may be lower in late summer, which is when itineraries most often change. Winter sailings, if offered, are about markets and cold, not views.

Embarkation city: Budapest

Budapest is two cities joined by bridges: hilly Buda on the west bank, flat Pest on the east. The airport (BUD) lies southeast of the center, and airport buses, trains and taxis all run to the center; the airport's own page (bud.hu) would not give us fares, so confirm there. Ships dock along the Pest embankment or at a pier near the Chain Bridge area, but your cruise documents name the exact berth. Arrive a day early if you can. Stay near the river on the Pest side, where trams 2 and 19 and the metro put you within walking distance of the Parliament, the Great Market Hall and the Danube promenade. A single public transport ticket is 500 HUF, a 24-hour travelcard is 2,750 HUF and a 72-hour card is 5,750 HUF . Budapest has a famous bathhouse culture; pick one in advance and book a morning slot. Boarding typically opens in the afternoon (as of 2026-10-17; confirm the window in your cruise documents), so a free morning to walk Buda Castle Hill works well.

Budapest rewards a slow first hour. Drop your bags, walk to the water, and let the bridges orient you: the Chain Bridge, the Elisabeth Bridge and the green Liberty Bridge all within an easy stroll. Locals will tell you to eat a late lunch and a long dinner, and to treat the thermal baths as an evening habit rather than a tourist stunt. If you have an extra night before the ship, use it for the baths and the Jewish Quarter courtyards. The cruise itself covers the rest, so the pre-night is where you control the experience.

Entry rules and safety

You will touch five countries. The US State Department levels we read on 2026-10-17: Hungary Level 1 (issued April 15, 2026), Croatia Level 1 (May 18, 2026), Serbia Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, for crime (August 27, 2026), Bulgaria Level 1 (October 9, 2025) and Romania Level 1 (October 14, 2025) . Bulgaria and Romania joined the Schengen area on 1 January 2025 ; Serbia is not in Schengen. Check this on the official page before you book. Our fetch of the EU travel page returned no readable text.

What the full guide adds

The full guide gives you ten chapters: a day-by-day plan with clock times, photo stops and rain backups; embarkation and pier logistics; every port with DIY versus ship-excursion advice; the Iron Gates stretch; the flight home; pre-booking and splurge-versus-save choices; a points playbook with transfer ratios; where to stay in Budapest and Bucharest; an insider checklist with a cost sheet; and a printable plan.

This is the free lite guide. The full day-by-day guide, with maps, photo stops, rain plans and the points playbook, is part of PerkJolt All-Access.

Good to know before you go

We checked what we could on 2026-10-17. Fees, schedules, port calls and even the order of ports on a river itinerary can change after you book, and low water can reshuffle a day. Confirm everything on the official page or in your booking before you sail. Viking's own itinerary pages would not open for us, so the route below is representative: confirm the ports and order on your booking.
