At a glance

  • Shape of the trip: about 11 days, Beijing (3 nights), a short flight to Chongqing, a 3-night downstream cruise from Chongqing to Yichang, a hotel night in Yichang, then Shanghai (2 nights).
  • The gorges: Qutang, Wu and Xiling are the three big ones, with a side trip on Shennong Stream (the "Lesser Three Gorges") and a visit to the Three Gorges Dam, which typically are shore excursions on the cruise.
  • Lines: Victoria Cruises and Century Cruises are the two typical Yangtze operators we looked at. Confirm the ship and route for your dates on the line's official site.
  • Victoria's own site lists a Chongqing-to-Yichang "Three Gorges Highlights" cruise as 4 days / 3 nights .

<!– Check this on the official page before you book.

  • Advisory: the State Department lists mainland China at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, issued September 4, 2026 .

  • Entry rules and visa-free transit change often. As of 2026-10-17 check the Chinese embassy's official visa page; we could not open it from our tools.

  • Payments: plan for Alipay or WeChat Pay linked to a foreign card, plus some backup. Confirm the current setup steps inside each app.
  • Best for: curious first-timers to China who want one big scenic highlight without a 3-week trip.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the usual favorites for Beijing and the river: milder air and clearer days. Summer is hot and humid along the river and brings rain and the busiest crowds at the Great Wall and Forbidden City. Winter is cold in Beijing and the river can be grey and misty, though quieter. Water levels and the season affect which side trips run, so ask the line about your dates. Chinese public holidays (the early-October national holiday and the Lunar New Year week) push crowds, prices and train and flight availability the wrong way; check the official holiday calendar before choosing dates.

The route in brief

You start in Beijing: the Forbidden City, a day at the Great Wall, and time for the hutong lanes. You then fly to Chongqing, a hillside river city, and board your ship. Sailing downstream, you typically pass Fengdu and Shibaozhai, enter Qutang Gorge, the shortest and steepest, then Wu Gorge with its misty peaks, and transfer to a small boat for the Shennong Stream. The final gorge, Xiling, leads to the Three Gorges Dam and its locks and ship lift. You disembark at Yichang and fly to Shanghai for the finale: the Bund, Pudong skyline and the Maglev if you like trains.

Honest downside: this is a fast trip. You change cities four times in about eleven days, the river segment is guided and scheduled, and weather or water levels can shuffle the shore stops, so it suits people who like a set program more than people who want long lazy mornings. Build in one spare half-day in each end city.

Ports, stops and the order of shore excursions vary by ship and season. Victoria's site lists year-round departures but no dates ; Century's page did not list Yangtze itineraries when we opened it .

Rough cost, three ways

Fill these blanks from the official pages named; we do not quote cabin fares because they change daily.

Item Budget Middle Comfortable Where to fill it in
Cruise fare (3 nights, per person) ____ ____ ____ victoriacruiselines.com or centurycruises.com, your dates
Flights US to Beijing and back from Shanghai ____ points / ____ cash ____ ____ airline award search
Domestic flights (Beijing-Chongqing, Yichang-Shanghai) ____ ____ ____ airline sites or Trip.com-style apps
Hotels, 6 nights in cities (Beijing 3, Yichang 1, Shanghai 2) ____ ____ ____ the chain's own site
Forbidden City and Great Wall tickets ____ ____ ____ dpm.org.cn and mutianyugreatwall.com
Food, local transit, tips ____ ____ ____ your own estimate

How to choose between the lines

Victoria and Century are not interchangeable. Victoria's site lists three Yangtze products by length, 3 nights, 4 nights and 7 nights, so you can match your calendar . Century's site names six Yangtze ships and highlights newer vessels, but showed no Yangtze itineraries when we looked . Ask each line for the ship, the deck plan and the shore-excursion list for your dates, then compare what is included.

Entry rules and advisories

<!– Check this on the official page before you book. The same page says the government "may issue exit bans on U.S. citizens and citizens of other countries without fair and transparent processes under the law," and states: "The Secretary of State has determined that China is wrongfully detaining some U.S. citizens." Read the full page before you book. <!– The rules have changed more than once. As of 2026-10-17 check the Chinese embassy's official visa page and the transit-stay rules for your exact route. (We could not confirm this on the official site when we checked — confirm it there before you book.) <!– Foreign-card payment setup differs by app and bank; check inside Alipay and WeChat Pay before you leave.

Three free things (with photo subjects)

  1. Walk the Bund at dusk in Shanghai and watch the Pudong skyline light up. Photo subject: the Bund waterfront promenade with the Pudong skyline across the Huangpu River.
  2. Stroll the old lanes around the Drum and Bell Towers in Beijing in the early morning. Photo subject: Beijing hutong lane near the Drum Tower.

Good to know before you go

We checked the facts below on 2026-10-17 against the official pages named in each line; several Chinese government and airport sites would not open or did not show fares, and we say so where it matters. Please confirm fares, fees, port calls, schedules and policies on the line's official page (and in your booking / the line's app) before you book or sail.
