Do I need timed tickets for Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery?
Short answer: Yes for Belém Tower. Plan on booking a date and time before you go. For Jerónimos, the paid cloister is worth booking ahead too, but the church is a separate, free entrance with no ticket. Both monuments are closed on Mondays.
The details
- Belém Tower is booked by date and time. Lisbon's official tourism site lists the tower under "Book a date and time." (checked Oct 12, 2026) After you book, a digital ticket is issued and you show it at the entrance. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
- Tower price. The monument operator's page lists the regular adult price at €15 ≈ $17. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Reduced rates and free categories vary, so check the ticket page when you pick a slot.
- The tower has had a recent change. It reopened in late May 2026 after a long restoration. Coverage of the reopening describes timed slots with a daily cap. Treat slots as limited, especially in busy months and on weekends. Availability varies, and the official ticket page shows what's left.
- Jerónimos has two separate entrances. The official visitor page lists the cloister (Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30–17:30, last entry 17:00) separately from the church (Tuesday to Saturday 10:30–17:00, Sundays and religious holidays 14:00–17:00). (checked Oct 12, 2026)
- The cloister is the ticketed part. Last we checked, the adult cloister ticket was roughly €18 ≈ $20. We couldn't confirm that on an official page, so check the current price on the official ticketing page linked from the monument's site. The church needs no ticket. You join its queue, which can be long at midday in high season.
- Closed days. Both monuments close on Mondays, January 1, Easter Sunday, May 1, June 13 and December 25. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
- Same-day tickets. A kiosk in front of the monument issues physical tickets for both the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and the Torre de Belém, and ticket offices close at 16:30. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Walk-up sales are a gamble for the tower if slots sell out.
- Tower hours. The operator's English page says Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30am–5:30pm. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Lisbon's tourism site lists last entry at 5:00pm. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Some official pages show seasonal variations, so confirm the hours for your date.
Tips
- Book the tower first. Pick your tower slot, then build the rest of your Belém day around it. The monastery is easier to adjust.
- Lisboa Card holders still need a booking for the tower. You enter your card number when booking, and the card must be validated at the access terminal on the day. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Don't assume the card lets you walk in.
- Use the official ticketing links. Start from the monument's own site (mosteirojeronimos.torrebelem.gov.pt) rather than resellers, so you aren't paying extra for the same entry.
- Plan church timing. On Sundays the church opens only from 14:00, so a Sunday morning church visit won't work.
- Go early or late for the free church queue. Mid-day is typically busiest.
- Don't use Monday for Belém. Move it to Tuesday through Sunday and keep Monday for something else in Lisbon.
FAQ
Can I just turn up at Belém Tower?
You can try, but it's risky. The tower now runs on booked time slots, and recent reports describe visitors without a slot being turned away on busy days. If you go without a ticket, buy at the kiosk or ticket office early. Hours and rules can change, so check the official page.
Is Jerónimos Monastery church free?
Yes. The church has its own entrance, and you queue without a ticket. The paid cloister is separate, so seeing both means two entrances. Church hours are shorter than cloister hours and differ on Sundays, so check the official visitor page for your day.
Do I need to book the Jerónimos cloister in advance?
It's strongly advisable, especially in high season. The ticketing is by date and time, and a booked slot saves you the same-day ticket line. Availability varies by date, so look at the monument's official ticket page for your day.
Does the Lisboa Card cover both?
It covers the tower, but you still book a slot online with your card number. For the monastery, confirm the current process on the official site before relying on it. Compare the card's price with your planned sights and transit before buying.
Which day is best to visit Belém?
Any Tuesday to Sunday works, since both monuments are closed Mondays. Early in the day is typically calmer, and midweek is usually lighter than weekends. Pick your tower slot first, then fit the monastery around it.
