Will transport strikes in Lisbon affect my trip?

Short answer: Maybe, but usually for a day, not your whole stay. Lisbon's metro can close completely during a strike, while buses, trains and ferries usually keep a thinner service. We didn't find an announced Lisbon metro or bus strike for the weeks ahead. Strike notices often appear only a few days beforehand, so check again before you fly.

The details

  • The metro is the weak point. For the 3 June 2026 general strike, Lisbon Metro said it expected to halt service and close stations. Service stopped from 23:00 on 2 June and resumed at 06:30 on 4 June.
  • Minimum services often don't apply to the metro. In April, metro workers struck for 24 hours on 9 April with no minimum services decreed, and all lines were closed. A second strike, planned for 14 April, was called off after the unions and management reached an agreement. Announced strikes do sometimes get cancelled, so check again on the day.
  • A general strike hits everything at once. The June notices covered Lisbon Metro, Carris, Carristur, Transtejo/Soflusa, Fertagus and CP, among others. Euronews reported closed metro stations, long lists of cancelled trains and hundreds of grounded flights.
  • Buses and ferries run thinner, not zero. In an earlier general strike, Carris had 12 bus lines covered by minimum services . Transtejo boats were expected to run about 25% of sailings in two short windows. Minimum services differ strike to strike, so treat these as examples.
  • Airline strikes are a separate risk. The easyJet Portugal cabin-crew strike of 2–6 October has already passed. A second round has been reported for 19–23 December. This is a press report, so confirm it with easyJet. Other airlines aren't covered by it.

Tips

  • Have a metro-free way to the airport. During a past metro strike, ANA advised passengers to use the Aerobus, Carris buses or taxis outside the terminal.
  • On strike days, follow the embassy-style checklist. Past U.S. Embassy guidance for Portuguese airport strikes advised confirming flight status with the airline on the day, allowing extra time at check-in and security, and expecting long lines and possible baggage delays.
  • Keep a buffer on your departure day. A strike on the day you fly home is the costliest case. Avoid tight same-day connections or non-refundable tours that morning.
  • Book timed tickets with flexibility. If you've prepaid for Sintra or a day trip, pick options with free cancellation or rebooking.
  • Check travel insurance wording. Strike cover is often excluded once a strike has been announced, so read the terms before you buy.

FAQ

Where do I check for current Lisbon strikes?

Start with the Metropolitano de Lisboa news page (metrolisboa.pt), which posts strike notices. Then check Carris, CP and your airline's app. Notices are usually in Portuguese, and a browser translator works fine. Look again 48 hours before you fly, because notices can arrive with little warning.

Are my flight rights protected if a strike cancels my flight?

Generally, flights departing the EU, or arriving on EU airlines, come with EU passenger rights. You can usually choose a refund or rerouting, plus meals and a hotel if you're stranded. Compensation depends on the cause, and strikes often count as outside the airline's control. Ask your airline and read the EU rules.

Will a Lisbon metro strike shut Lisbon's tourist trams and Sintra trains?

Not automatically. The June notices covered several operators, including Carris and CP. A metro-only strike can leave trams, buses and trains running normally. During a general strike, assume reduced service everywhere and allow far more time.
