How do I get from Suvarnabhumi Airport to central Bangkok?

Short answer: For most travelers heading to Siam, Sukhumvit or the Skytrain areas, take the Airport Rail Link (City Line) from the airport basement. It is typically the cheapest and most predictable option because it skips road traffic. If you land late, have lots of luggage, or are going to a riverside or Old Town hotel, a metered taxi or Grab from Level 1 is the easy choice.

The details

1. Airport Rail Link (City Line), best for Phaya Thai, Siam and Sukhumvit.

  • The station is on the basement level (B1) of the main terminal, below the arrivals floors. Follow the train signs, buy a ticket at the machines, and ride toward Phaya Thai.
  • Last we checked, the full ride to Phaya Thai takes roughly 30 minutes. Fares are distance-based and top out in the mid-40s of baht. Trains typically run from early morning until around midnight, every 10–15 minutes or so.
  • Two stops matter most. Makkasan connects to the MRT subway (Phetchaburi station). Phaya Thai connects to the BTS Skytrain, which takes you on toward Siam, Chit Lom, Asok and beyond.
  • Fares, first and last train times and frequency change from time to time. Check the Airport Rail Link operator's notices, or ask at the station, before you rely on a late train.

2. Metered taxi, best for late arrivals, bags and door-to-door trips.

  • Taxis are available 24 hours a day on Level 1 of the Main Terminal, between Gates 4 and 7 (inner curb).
  • Use the official queue and take a ticket from the machine. Make sure the meter is on.
  • Typically you pay the meter, plus a 50-baht airport surcharge, plus any expressway tolls in cash. Most hotel-area trips land in the low-to-mid hundreds of baht in normal traffic. Rush hour, rain and distant hotels push the total up.
  • Allow roughly 40–70 minutes, depending on traffic and where you're going.

3. Grab (ride-hailing).

  • The airport's official transport page lists Grab alongside taxis, so it is an accepted option.
  • The price is shown in the app before you book. Fares can jump when several flights land together or when it rains. Check the pickup point on the airport page above, because it differs from the public taxi door.

4. Buses and vans, the budget fallback.

  • A free shuttle runs from the terminal to the airport's Public Transportation Center, where city buses leave. Many of these routes serve suburbs rather than the tourist core. Typically the best-known ones head toward Victory Monument, On Nut BTS and the Khao San Road area. Routes, fares and hours change, so check the airport's transport page.
  • Buses are slower than the train and need more patience with luggage. They make sense mainly if your hotel sits on a route and you're traveling light.

5. Private transfer or AOT Limousine.

  • The airport page lists AOT Limousine and other shuttle services too. If you're arriving with a group, a lot of luggage, small children or a very late flight, a pre-booked fixed-price car takes away the guesswork.

Which one should you pick?

  • Staying near a BTS or MRT station (Siam, Asok, Phrom Phong, Silom): train to Phaya Thai or Makkasan, then Skytrain or subway.
  • Staying in Old Town, Khao San or on the river: a taxi or Grab is simpler. The train plus a transfer still works if you're patient.
  • Landing after about 23:00: plan on a taxi or Grab. Immigration and baggage can take long enough that you miss the last train.
  • Two or more travelers with big bags: a taxi often costs about the same per person as the train once you count the transfers.

Tips

  • Pick up some Thai baht before you head out, or use an ATM in the arrivals area. Ticket machines and taxi tolls are easier with small notes and coins.
  • Go to the Level 1 taxi queue and ignore anyone in the arrivals hall offering a ride. The official queue gives you a ticket and a registered driver.
  • Have your hotel name and address in Thai, saved on your phone, for the taxi driver.
  • If you take the train, put your luggage where you can see it, and keep in mind the station is underground, so you'll use escalators or lifts.
  • Download Grab and set up payment before you land. Roaming data or a local eSIM makes this smoother.

FAQ

Is there a train from Suvarnabhumi Airport to central Bangkok?

Yes. The Airport Rail Link's City Line starts at the airport basement and ends at Phaya Thai, where you can change to the BTS Skytrain. A stop at Makkasan connects to the MRT subway. It's usually the fastest and cheapest option, but check operating hours for late arrivals.

Can I get a taxi from Suvarnabhumi at night?

Yes. Taxis run 24 hours a day on Level 1, between Gates 4 and 7. Use the official queue, insist on the meter, and expect the airport surcharge and tolls on top.

How long does it take to get from Suvarnabhumi to central Bangkok?

Typically about 30 minutes by train to Phaya Thai. By road it's roughly 40–70 minutes, and more in rush hour or heavy rain. Add time for immigration, baggage and walking to the station or taxi queue.

Is Grab cheaper than a taxi from the airport?

Sometimes similar, sometimes more. Grab shows a fixed price up front, but it can surge at busy times. A metered taxi's total depends on traffic and tolls. Compare both in the moment if you're flexible.

Which airport am I landing at?

Most international flights use Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Don Mueang (DMK) is a separate airport with different transport links, and the two are connected by a shuttle. Check your booking confirmation before choosing a route into the city.
