American Express Gold Card Review

Offer details checked on americanexpress.com on October 9, 2026. Card terms change, so confirm the current offer on the issuer’s page before you apply. See our advertiser disclosure.

The short version

The American Express Gold Card is a points machine for people who spend a lot on food. It earns 4X Membership Rewards points at restaurants worldwide and at U.S. supermarkets, and those points transfer to airline and hotel programs, which is where they get their best value. The catch is a $325 annual fee that you only win back if you actually use the monthly dining, Uber, Resy and Dunkin’ credits.

  • Annual fee: $325
  • Welcome offer: as high as 100,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $8,000 on purchases in your first 6 months. Amex says offers vary and you may not be eligible.
  • Best for: heavy restaurant and grocery spenders who want transferable points for travel
  • Skip it if: you won’t use monthly credits, or you want lounge access (this card doesn’t include it)

How you earn

  • 4X at restaurants worldwide, on up to $50,000 a calendar year (then 1X)
  • 4X at U.S. supermarkets, on up to $25,000 a calendar year (then 1X)
  • 5X on prepaid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app
  • 3X on flights booked directly with airlines or through AmexTravel.com
  • 2X on prepaid car rentals through AmexTravel.com and cruises booked and paid through AmexTravel.com
  • 1X on everything else

The two 4X categories are the reason to carry this card. A household that spends $800 a month on groceries and $500 on dining out earns about 62,400 points a year from those two categories alone, before the welcome offer.

The credits, and whether they cover the fee

Amex lists four recurring credits. Most are paid out monthly, so they reward people who already use these services, not people who have to change habits to use them.

  • Up to $120 dining credit: up to $10 a month at Grubhub (including Seamless), Buffalo Wild Wings, Five Guys, The Cheesecake Factory and Wonder. Enrollment required.
  • $120 Uber Cash: $10 a month for U.S. Uber rides or Uber Eats once you add the card to your Uber account.
  • Up to $100 Resy credit: up to $50 from January to June and $50 from July to December at qualifying U.S. Resy restaurants. Enrollment required.
  • Up to $84 Dunkin’ credit: up to $7 a month at U.S. Dunkin’ locations. Enrollment required.

Used in full, those credits add up to $424 a year, which is $99 more than the $325 fee. Be honest with yourself here: if you would only use the Uber Cash and half the Resy credit, you are effectively paying about $155 a year for the 4X earning.

Travel extras include a $100 credit toward eligible charges when you book two nights or more with The Hotel Collection through AmexTravel.com, and an upgrade to Hertz Five Star status (enrollment required).

Getting the most from the points

Membership Rewards points are flexible: you can transfer them to airline and hotel partners, often for far more value than using them for statement credits or gift cards. Our Amex Membership Rewards guide covers how the program works, and the transfer partners chart shows where the points can go.

A simple rule: never transfer points speculatively. Find award space first, then transfer, because transfers to partners can’t be reversed.

Pros and cons

  • Pro: 4X on two of the biggest everyday categories, dining and groceries
  • Pro: transferable points with many airline and hotel partners
  • Pro: Amex lets you see if you’re approved with no credit score impact before you accept the card
  • Con: $325 fee that relies on monthly credits to justify
  • Con: 4X grocery earning applies to U.S. supermarkets only, and both 4X categories are capped
  • Con: no airport lounge access

Who should get it

Get the Gold Card if food is one of your biggest monthly expenses, you already use Uber or Resy, and you want to fly on points. If you mainly want lounge access and travel perks, look at premium cards instead. If you want a lower fee, compare it with the other options in our best travel credit cards list.
