Is the Monument of the Discoveries worth visiting?

Short answer: Yes, but mostly for what you can see from the top. The monument itself and the compass-rose pavement in front are free to see any time. The full ticket for the viewpoint, exhibition and film is €10 ≈ $11. Pay for it if you want the Belém panorama. Skip the interior if you're pressed for time or the sky is gray.

The details

  • What you get for the ticket. The monument's own site describes a remodeled interior with a viewpoint, an auditorium and an exhibition hall. The architect Fernando Ramalho remodeled it that way. The exhibitions are temporary, so what's on will differ from what past visitors describe. Check the official site for the current show.
  • Hours right now. October to February it's open daily 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, with last entry at 5:30 pm. March to September it's 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, last entry 6:30 pm. Today falls in the winter schedule. Seasonal hours can shift, so check the page before you go.
  • Closing days. It closes January 1, May 1, and December 24, 25 and 31.
  • Discounts. The official price list shows €5 ≈ $5.63 for youths 13 to 25 who don't live in Lisbon municipality, and €7 ≈ $7.89 for persons with specific needs. Other reductions and exemptions depend on proof of eligibility. Read the full list on that page. If you hold a Lisboa Card, it has typically given free entry here, but confirm that on the official page and the card's own site.
  • The film. It plays on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays at 11:15 am and 4:00 pm. The ticket seller notes that screenings may be canceled or changed for scheduling reasons.
  • Buying online. BOL is the only authorized online ticket platform. Resellers may add a markup, so start at the official site.

Who should go in, and who can skip it

Go in if you like views, want to see the compass-rose pavement as a whole, or want to see Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery from above. A typical visit takes roughly 30 to 60 minutes, based on what we've seen. Official sources don't give a figure, so plan flexibly.

Skip the interior if you're on a tight Belém day, the visibility is poor, or you mainly want a photo. The statues and the pavement are free from the riverside plaza.

Tips

  • Go early in the day to avoid the busiest tour-bus hours. This is general advice, not an official figure.
  • Allow for the last-entry times above, especially in winter, when the closing time is an hour earlier.
  • If you're visiting on a weekend, plan around the film times if you want to see it.
  • Pair it with other Belém sights, and check whether a Lisboa Card pays off for your whole itinerary.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. The plaza is wide and you'll do a fair amount of walking around Belém.

FAQ

Is the Monument of the Discoveries free to visit?

Looking at the exterior and the pavement is free. Going inside is not. The full ticket is €10 ≈ $11 for the viewpoint, exhibition and film, with exemptions listed on the official page.

Do I need to book in advance?

Tickets can be bought online through the authorized platform, and the monument also has its own ticket office. We found no official rule requiring advance booking. Buying ahead can save time in busy periods. Check the official tickets page for current guidance.

Is it open on Mondays?

Yes, last we checked. The official page lists it open every day, apart from the closing dates above. Some third-party guides say it closes Mondays in winter. Trust the official page.

Is the exhibition inside the main reason to go?

Not really. The exhibitions are temporary, and the ticket covers whichever are on. Treat the exhibition as a bonus. The viewpoint is the main draw for most visitors.

Is there an exhibition-only ticket?

Some guides mention a lower-priced exhibition-only option. We couldn't confirm its price on the official page, so check the tickets page or the ticket office if you only want the exhibition.
