Atmos Rewards lets you choose how you earn: a decision guide

By PerkJolt Travel Desk
Travel scene

Atmos Rewards, the combined Alaska and Hawaiian program, now lets members choose how they earn on flights, according to an Alaska Airlines release dated Sept 29, 2026 (page modified Oct 8). Alaska calls Atmos "the only airline loyalty program to let members choose how they earn points for flights" (as of Oct 11, 2026; confirm on the Alaska Airlines newsroom release linked above).

Starting Oct 1, 2026, members can choose to earn points and status points by distance traveled, price paid, or segments flown. The choice applies to flights departing on or after Jan 1, 2027. Current members who do not choose keep distance-based earning. New members joining on or after Jan 1, 2027 default to price paid. You can change your choice once per calendar year, and the change applies to future travel (as of Oct 11, 2026; confirm on the Alaska Airlines newsroom release).

Which one fits? Generally, distance tends to suit long, cheap flights, because you are rewarded for the miles flown rather than the low fare. Price paid generally suits expensive short hops, where a high fare would otherwise earn little on distance. Segments generally suit frequent connectors, since each flight counts regardless of length or price. These are rules of thumb, not calculations.

The better test is your own history. Look at your last year of flying: how many segments, how far, and how much you paid. Then compare how each method would treat that mix. Because you can only change once per calendar year, it is worth doing this before you lock in a choice.

The release has other changes too. Atmos Communities grew from 2 to 6 on Oct 1: Global Locals, Families on the Go, Culinary Journeys, Active Escapes, Club 49 and Huakaʻi by Hawaiian. Perks include free bags, bonus-point challenges, 20% off select Atmos Unlocked experiences and award discounts for children. Starting Nov 2, Platinum and Titanium members can bring eligible children and one companion into Premium Class at no cost when space is available (as of Oct 11, 2026; confirm on the Alaska Airlines newsroom release).

On the card and points side, a debit card is planned for early 2027, with pre-registration at atmosrewards.com/debit. In 2027, eligible Bank of America cardholders can transfer points to Atmos. Bilt already transfers to Atmos at 1:1, per PerkJolt's verified chart (checked Oct 8, 2026). See our Bilt Rewards guide and transfer partners guide for more (as of Oct 11, 2026; confirm on the Alaska Airlines newsroom release).

The takeaway: you get one free change per calendar year, so choose using your own flying history. Program rules, dates and perks can change, so confirm on Alaska's official pages before you decide.
