Amex Platinum Card Review

Offer and benefit details checked on americanexpress.com on October 9, 2026. Card terms change, so confirm the current offer on the issuer’s page before you apply. See our advertiser disclosure.

The short version

The Platinum Card from American Express is a luxury travel card with a very large fee and a very long list of credits. It wins on airport lounges and premium hotel perks. It only pays off if you travel often and will actually use a good share of the credits, because the $895 annual fee is real money and most of the credits are paid out in monthly, quarterly or semi-annual pieces.

  • Annual fee: $895
  • See current offer on the issuer’s site
  • Best for: frequent flyers who want lounge access and stay at upscale hotels
  • Skip it if: you travel a few times a year, or you would rather earn bonus points on everyday spending

How you earn

  • 5X on flights booked directly with airlines or through American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 a calendar year
  • 5X on prepaid hotels booked through American Express Travel
  • 1X on everything else

That is a narrow earning structure. Pair the Platinum with a card that earns more on dining and groceries, such as the Amex Gold Card, if you want the points to add up quickly.

Lounge access

This is the card’s headline benefit. Amex’s Global Lounge Collection covers more than 1,550 airport lounges, including Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass (enrollment required), other partner lounges, and 10 Delta Sky Club visits a year when you fly an eligible Delta flight. If you pass through airports with Centurion Lounges, this alone can change how you feel about travel days.

The credits

Amex says the card offers more than $3,500 in annual value. That number assumes you use everything. Here is what is on the list, grouped by how likely a typical traveler is to use it.

Easy to use if you travel

  • Up to $600 hotel credit: up to $300 back semi-annually on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings through American Express Travel (The Hotel Collection requires at least two nights)
  • Up to $200 airline fee credit: incidental fees such as checked bags on one airline you select
  • Up to $219 CLEAR+ credit for a CLEAR+ membership
  • $200 Uber Cash: $15 a month plus a $20 bonus in December, for U.S. rides and orders

Useful only if they match your life

  • Up to $400 Resy credit: up to $100 a quarter at qualifying U.S. Resy restaurants (enrollment required)
  • Up to $300 digital entertainment credit: up to $25 a month with participating partners (enrollment required)
  • Up to $300 lululemon credit: up to $75 a quarter (enrollment required)
  • Up to $300 Equinox credit (enrollment required)
  • Up to $200 Oura Ring credit (enrollment required)
  • Up to $155 Walmart+ credit: up to $12.95 a month plus tax for a monthly membership
  • Up to $120 Uber One credit for an auto-renewing Uber One membership

Our honest math: a traveler who uses the hotel credit, the airline fee credit, CLEAR+ and the Uber Cash collects up to $1,219 a year, which covers the $895 fee before counting lounges. Anyone who would not book prepaid premium hotels through Amex should knock off $600, which leaves the fee uncovered unless the lifestyle credits fit.

Using the points

The welcome offer is the big prize. Membership Rewards points usually get their best value when transferred to airline and hotel partners for award bookings, rather than used for gift cards or Pay with Points. Start with our Amex Membership Rewards guide and the transfer partners chart, and always find award space before you transfer.

Who should get it

Get the Platinum if you fly several times a year, value lounges, and will book at least one premium hotel stay through Amex each half of the year. Otherwise a mid-tier card will leave more money in your pocket. Compare it with the alternatives in our best travel credit cards list.
